In the present study an immunofluorescence technique detecting antibody-coated bacteria was evaluated. It was applied to the sputum of seven patients with bacteremic pneumococcal pneumonia to assess its diagnostic usefulness. We conclude that it is a valid, quick and easy technique which permits to differentiate between bacteria contaminating the sputum from those involved in the infection. This gives, therefore, a new value to the study of sputum. In our series the duration of the disease had no influence on the results, and the three antigammaglobulins used (anti-IgG, anti-IgA and anti-IgM) yielded the same results in each sample. Thus, we feel that the local pulmonary immune response was secondary in type.

Using Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), it is possible to show chemical composition of materials and / or profile chemical changes occurring in tissues, cells, and body fluids during onset and progression of diseases. For diagnostic application, the use of blood would be the most appropriate in biospectroscopy studies since, (i) it is easily accessible and, (ii) enables frequent analyses of biochemical changes occurring in pathological states. At present, different studies have investigated potential of serum, plasma and sputum being alternative biofluids for lung cancer detection using FTIR.

Objectives: Early detection of treatment failure is essential to improve the management of drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB). We evaluated the molecular bacterial load assay (MBLA) in comparison to standard diagnostic tests for monitoring therapy of patients affected by drug-resistant TB.
Methods: The performance of MBLA in tracking treatment response in a prospective cohort of patients with pulmonary MDR/RR- and pre-XDR/XDR-TB was compared with mycobacterial culture, mycobacterial DNA detection using GeneXpert (Xpert) and microscopy detection of sputum acid-fast-bacilli.
