Purpose: Sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) modulates the availability of biologically active free sex hormones. The regulatory role of SHBG might be important in the relationship between hormone levels and the modification of lipid profiles in girls with precocious puberty. However, few studies have evaluated the relationship of SHBG, free estradiol index (FEI), and lipid levels in these girls.

Methods: One hundred and nine girls less than 8 years of age with pubertal development were enrolled. FEI was calculated with SHBG and estradiol (E2). We analyzed SHBG between peak luteinizing hormone (LH)≥5 (IU/L) (group 1) and LH<5 (IU/L) (group 2) through a gonadotropin releasing hormone stimulation test.

Results: Body mass index (BMI) standard deviation score (SDS) was higher in group 2 than in group 1 (P=0.004). Serum SHBG levels did not differ and FEI was not higher in group 1 (P=0.122). Serum cholesterol, HDL, and LDL did not differ; however, triglyceride levels were higher in group 2 (P=0.023). SHBG was negatively correlated with bone age advancement, BMI, BMI SDS, and FEI, and was positively correlated with HDL. However, SHBG was not correlated with E2 or peak LH.

Conclusion: Serum SHBG itself might not be associated with precocious puberty in girls, but it might be related to BMI and lipid profiles. Further studies are needed to reveal the relationship between sex hormone and obesity in girls with precocious puberty.

Article Synopsis
  • High-dose testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) combined with finasteride offers benefits such as improved body composition, muscle strength, and bone density in older men, while mitigating the risk of prostate enlargement.
  • A pilot study involved 12 men with spinal cord injuries, demonstrating that TRT with finasteride significantly increased lean body mass and muscle size, alongside enhancing bone mineral density compared to a placebo.
  • Results suggest TRT + finasteride reduced fat mass and improved muscular strength, with measurable benefits observed as early as 6 months into the treatment, indicating its potential effectiveness for men with low testosterone post-injury.

Objective: This study aimed to explore the role of the waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) in assessing insulin resistance (IR) in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Materials And Methods: We enrolled 882 PCOS-afflicted women in a cross-sectional analysis to evaluate the association of the WHtR with IR. Their demographic characteristics, anthropometric parameters, and fasting blood samples were collected and measured.

Effect of Reproductive Tract Microbiota on Vaginal Fibroblasts in Pelvic Organ Prolapse.

Urogynecology (Phila)

December 2024

Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology, Massachusetts General Hospital, Vincent Center for Reproductive Biology, Boston, MA.

Importance: The effect of vaginal bacteria on wound healing is an evolving area of study. Bacterial vaginosis (BV), characterized by an overgrowth of anaerobic bacteria, is linked to increased surgical site infections after pelvic surgery. While BV-associated microbes are known to impair epithelial repair, their effects on fibroblasts, which are crucial for wound healing and prolapse recurrence after pelvic organ prolapsesurgery, are unclear.

Operational strategies have been applied in constructed wetlands to optimize the removal of nutrients and hormones that are still a concern in wastewater treatment. The strategy of intensifying intermittent aeration was investigated in two microcosm-scale vertical-flow constructed wetlands (VFCWs) planted with Eichhornia crassipes onto autoclaved aerated concrete (AC) in the removal of nutrients, estrone (E1), 17β-estradiol (E2) and 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2). Background: Kallmann syndrome (KS) is a rare genetic disorder marked by hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and either anosmia or hyposmia. It exhibits genetic heterogeneity, with mutations identified in only 30 % of cases, involving various genes such as KAL1, FGFR1, FGF8, CHD7, and SOX10. Here, we present a case of gonadotropin deficiency associated with KS, observed in both a mother and her daughter, the latter conceived through assisted reproductive technology using the mother's ovum.
