This study demonstrates that a new method to align microparticles releasing bioactive molecules in microchannels of a hydrogel allows the guiding of growth direction and spacing of vascular networks.

Knowing mechanisms that facilitate the emergence of post-glacial ecosystems is urgently required given rapid recent glacial retreat in high latitude and high elevation regions. We examined the effect of nutrient hotspots created via communal dung deposition by wild, native Andean camelids on soil abiotic and biotic properties and plant cover in the rapidly deglaciating Cordillera Vilcanota, southeastern Peru. Animal-modified proglacial soils were significantly enriched in all measured edaphic properties compared to reference glacial-till soils of the same age adjacent to animal-modified soil patches.

Our understanding of identifying and monitoring surge-type glacier distribution patterns, fluctuations, periodicities, and occurrence mechanism under the changing climate is challenging and scarce due to small numbers, limitations on the spatiotemporal coverage of remote sensing observations, and insufficient field-based glaciological data from the High Mountain Asia. The surging glaciers have caused major hazards, and their movement can destroy peripheral and downstream areas like roads, connecting bridges, villages, and hydropower stations and trigger a glacial lake outburst flood or form a dammed (moraine or ice) lake in High Mountain Asia (HMA) in the recent past. Many glaciers have experienced a mass loss and retreat due to ongoing climate change in HMA in recent decades, whereas studies conducted in the Karakorum, Pamir, Tien Shan, and Kunlun Shan regions have reported the surging of the glaciers.

Multi-technique integrated surveys were carried out to investigate brine characteristics, connectivity and flow patterns in the Boulder Clay Glacier area, Victoria Land, East Antarctica. Specifically, electromagnetic geophysical surveys focused mainly on Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and integrated by Frequency Domain induction, not only demonstrated the presence of brines in the subsurface, but also allowed to image several structures and glaciological elements. Chemical analyses suggested the origin and differentiation of the brines, providing evidence for interconnected pathways.

Glacier mice are peculiar rolling or stationary moss balls found on the surface of some glaciers. They may harbour an ecological habitat for cold-adapted invertebrates and microorganisms, but little is known about their potential to accumulate and disseminate harmful elements and substances. In this study, we investigate the presence of fallout radionuclides (Cs, Pu, Pu, Pu, Pb) and heavy metals (Pb, As, Hg, Cd) in glacier mice and compare the results to bryophytes from adjacent glacier ecosystems.
