The preparation of nonspherical materials composed of separated multicomponents by droplet-based microfluidics remains a challenge. Based on polymerization-induced phase separation and droplet coalescence in microfluidics, we prepared emulsions of variously shaped PAM/PEG core/shell droplets and hydrogels composed of two separated components, which show flexible and transformable hierarchical structures and microarchitectures. We find that AM/PEG aqueous droplets form a core/shell structure after polymerization resulting from phase separation. Thus multicore/shell droplets are easily produced by coalescence of core/shell structures. By changing the polymerization temperature and the flow rate, the morphology of the multicore droplets and the hydrogel can be easily adjusted. The hydrogels exhibit apparent anisotropy and different protein release rates depending on their structures. The preparation technique is simple and versatile and the resulting hydrogels have potential applications in many fields.

The use of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry in single particle mode (SP-ICP-MS) for the characterization of micro and nanostructured materials is a growing field of research. In this work, the possibility of expanding the boundaries to anisotropic structures including solid Pt-nanorods and hollowed FeO-nanotubes is presented. The spark plasma sintering (SPS) process was used to create iron-based composites reinforced with tungsten carbide (WC) particles of various morphologies, and the effect of WC particle morphology on material wear resistance was systematically investigated. The experiment revealed that the addition of non-spherical WC (CTC-A) significantly altered the composites' friction coefficient, wear morphology, and wear mechanism. As the CTC-A content increased, the composites' wear rate decreased at first, then increased, and then decreased again.

It is proven through transmission electron microscope (TEM) analysis that solar sensitizer CuSnS (CTS) dots prepared via the hot-injection route are nonspherical, polyhedral nanocrystals with the size of ∼11 nm. CTS dots were deposited into a porous TiO layer to form CTS/TiO, an effective type II heterojunction in photoanodes. The electronic and energy band structures of TiO and CTS were studied by the plane-wave ultrasoft pseudopotential method based on density functional theory (DFT) and verified by ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy.

For the first time, curdlan (CL) was reported to have emulsifying property. Based on its emulsifying property and gelling property, the CL-based simple-structured emulsion gels were prepared. Among different CLs, CL-4 showed relatively good emulsifying property and its based emulsion showed the best stability, which might be mainly due to its highest hydrophobic property.
