UV phototherapy has a long history of use for the treatment of select diseases in dermatology. Its use has evolved into more effective and targeted modalities, including psoralen + UV-A photochemotherapy, narrowband UV-B, excimer laser, and UV-A1 phototherapy. With its proven record of efficacy and safety, UV phototherapy is an excellent option in the treatment of an ever-growing number of skin conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • Plasmodium, the parasite causing malaria, relies on the purine salvage pathway for survival, making its enzymes, like HGXPRT, potential targets for new antimalarial drugs.
  • The study focused on inhibiting HGXPRT to disable the parasite's nucleotide synthesis, optimizing assays to evaluate over 200 compounds for their inhibitory effects.
  • Fourteen compounds were identified as effective inhibitors, with promising interactions at the enzyme's binding site, and they were shown to be non-toxic to human cells, setting the stage for further drug development.

Article Synopsis
  • - Anamorelin is an oral drug designed to treat cancer cachexia, a condition often seen in cancer patients, and it interacts with the liver enzyme CYP3A4, which can lead to drug-drug interactions.
  • - The study developed a high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet (HPLC-UV) method to measure anamorelin levels in human plasma, focusing on sample preparation and accurate separation using specific chemical conditions.
  • - The method showed a strong calibration curve and good precision and accuracy, suggesting it could be effectively used in clinical settings to monitor anamorelin concentration.

The burning truth about light therapy: a retrospective analysis of the MAUDE database on UV phototherapy and photodynamic therapy complications 2013-2023.

Arch Dermatol Res

December 2023

Department of Dermatology, Weill Cornell Medicine, 1305 York Avenue, New York, NY, 10021, USA.

Introduction: Phototherapy and photodynamic therapy (PDT) are ultraviolet light (UV) based therapies for patients with skin diseases, and are sometimes associated with potential adverse events (AE)s, including erythema, pain, pruritus, burns, and photoaging.

Methods: We investigated UV phototherapy and PDT safety using the United States (US) Food and Drug Administration's (FDA)'s Manufacturer and User Facility Device Experience (MAUDE) database. The MAUDE database, including medical device reports (MDR)s informed by voluntary and obligatory reporters since 1991, was searched for AEs associated with UV phototherapy and PDT 1/1/91-3/1/23.

Phototherapy for atopic dermatitis: A survey of European practice.

J Eur Acad Dermatol Venereol

March 2024

Unit for Paediatric and Population-Based Dermatology Research, St John's Institute of Dermatology, Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and King's College London, London, UK.

Background: Phototherapy is used to treat atopic dermatitis (AD). Evidence for its efficacy, impact on quality of life, cost-effectiveness and short- and long-term safety with real-life usage is weak.

Objectives: We established a taskforce to examine how phototherapy is currently being used as a treatment for AD across the United Kingdom and Europe to inform our understanding and guide future research into management of patients with AD using UV-based phototherapies.
