The separation of the enantiomers of phenylalanine amide and N-methyl derivatives as well as some amino alcohols was studied by CE in acidic BGEs using CDs as chiral selectors. The native CDs displayed only low chiral recognition ability at a concentration of 15 mg/mL in 20 mM sodium phosphate buffer, pH 2.5. In contrast, the analyte enantiomers were separated in the presence of randomly sulfated CDs under reversed polarity of the applied voltage. Sulfated β-CD proved to be the most universal selector resulting in the enantioseparation of all analytes. Opposite enantiomer migration order depending on the size of the CD cavity was observed for phenylalanine amide and 2-amino-2-phenylethanol. The R-enantiomers migrated first in the presence of sulfated α-CD and γ-CD while the S-enantiomers were detected first in the presence of sulfated β-CD. The enantioseparations could be rationalized based on analyte complexation by the respective CDs except for 2-amino-2-phenylethanol and sulfated β-CD where essentially equal complexation constants were derived for the enantiomers. In this case, the migration behavior could be attributed to the mobilities of the enantiomer-CD complexes adding another example to the CE-specific phenomenon of enantioseparations based primarily on complex mobilities.

The RFamide peptide family is a group of proteins that share a common C-terminal arginine-phenylalanine-amide motif. To date, the family comprises five groups in mammals: neuropeptide FF, LPXRFamides/RFamide-related peptides, prolactin releasing peptide, QRFP, and kisspeptins. This study examines the role of water in binding equilibria with a special focus on secondary solutes (cosolutes) that influence the equilibrium but are not constituents of the final product. Using a thermodynamic framework that includes an explicit term for the release of water molecules upon binding, this investigation reveals how solutes may alter equilibria by changing the activity of the reactants, reflected in Δ°, and by changing the chemical potential of the solvent, reflected in Δ. The framework is applied to four experimental binding systems that differ in the degree of electrostatic contributions.

Objective: To elucidate the mechanism of the nourishing and purging fire Chinese herbal mixture (NYPF) in delaying light-induced premature puberty in rats.
Methods: Twenty-one days old female Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to normal group (N), long light exposure group (L), NYPF and normal saline group (NS). Rats in the L, NYPF and NS groups were exposed to 16 h: 350 lux light/8 h: dark, while rats in the N group were exposed to 12 h: 50 lux light/12 h: dark.
