In multi-pass Thomson scattering (TS) scheme, a laser pulse makes multiple round trips through the plasma, and the effective laser energy is enhanced, and we can increase the signal-to-noise ratio as a result. We have developed a coaxial optical cavity in which a laser pulse is confined, and we performed TS measurements using the coaxial cavity in tokamak plasmas for the first time. In the optical cavity, the laser energy attenuation was approximately 30% in each round trip, and we achieved a photon number gain of about 3 compared with that obtained in the first round trip. In addition, the temperature measurement accuracy was improved by accumulating the first three round trip waveforms.

We present a semi-analytical model that can accurately explain the working principle behind the recently reported electrically injected InGaAs/GaAs monolithic nano-ridge lasers and more importantly show how the model can be used to study the effect of device parameters on the spectral behavior, the slope efficiency and the threshold gain. We show that mode beating between the fundamental mode and a higher order mode is fundamental in the operation of these lasers. Analytical expressions for codirectional mode coupling are used in developing the round-trip laser model.

The Important Round-Trip Energy Transfer for Excitation of the Red Emission in the Er/Yb System.

J Phys Chem Lett

State Key Laboratory of Luminescence Science and Technology, Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, 3888 Eastern South Lake Road, Changchun, 130033, China.

Round-trip energy transfer (RTET) in the popular Er/Yb upconversion (UC) system is a newly discovered mechanism for the red emission of Er through Yb as an intermediate ion. However, the importance of the RTET still remains a question. Here, we show in cubic YO that the new mechanism defeats conventional ones and dominates the red emission in both UC and down-shifting (DS) luminescence for a wide concentration range of Yb.

Robust Spray Combustion Enabling Hierarchical Porous Carbon-Supported FeCoNi Alloy Catalyst for Zn-Air Batteries.

Rechargeable Zn-air batteries (RZABs) are poised for industrial application, yet they require low-cost, high-performance catalysts that efficiently facilitate both the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The pivotal challenge lies in designing multimetal active sites and optimizing the carbon skeleton structure to modulate catalyst activity. In this study, we introduce a novel hierarchical porous carbon-supported FeCoNi bifunctional catalyst, synthesized via a spray combustion method.

A 55-year-old woman with non-small cell lung carcinoma complained of epigastric pain, bloating, anorexia and postprandial nausea and vomiting over a five-year period. An upper gastrointestinal pan-glucosamine contrast examination revealed a distinctive large, hook-shaped, ptotic gastric lumen with normal motility. The contrast agent demonstrated an abnormal round-trip flow anterior to the spine at the duodenal level, with pooling and gradual passage through this region in strands after prolonged retention.

Background: The institutional standard follow-up schedule for patients undergoing spinal instrumentation and fusion for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is return to clinic at 6-weeks and 3 months post-procedure for radiographs. COVID-19 prompted a change in this practice and most routine post-op visits were performed virtually during that time. The purpose of this study is to estimate the cost and benefit of in-person visits to inform the relative value of in-person follow-up using data from the year prior to COVID changes.
