We describe two new sympatric species of Sarsiellidae from coastal Florida, USA: Eusarsiella bryanjuarezi sp. nov. and Eusarsiella eli sp. nov. We also present a morphological character matrix and maximum likelihood phylogenetic analysis for Sarsiellinae based on original species descriptions, representing 139 sarsiellins (including E. bryanjuarezi and E. eli). While support values across the phylogeny are low, E. bryanjuarezi and E. eli form a sister group pair with 68 % bootstrap support. Our phylogeny also showed support for six other sympatric sister-species pairs, distributed across Sarsiellinae's range, which may be candidates for the study of speciation and niche differentiation. Similar to other analyses of myodocopids, our Sarsiellinae phylogeny recovered only three monophyletic genera: Anscottiella, Cymbicopia, and Chelicopia, indicating that characters used in taxonomy may often be homoplasious. Because of our finding of multiple polyphyletic genera, including the two most speciose genera in the subfamily (Eusarsiella and Sarsiella, the type genus) Sarsiellinae is a strong candidate for taxonomic revision.

We evaluate the evidence of cryptic speciation in Larimus breviceps, a species widely distributed in the western South Atlantic, from the Greater Antilles to Santa Catarina in Brazil. Mitochondrial (COI, Cyt b, and Control Region) and nuclear (IGF1 and Tmo-4C4) sequences were obtained from populations in the western South Atlantic. The analysis revealed two genetically distinct, sympatric lineages with no gene flow, with L.

Background: Food provides essential nutrients and energy necessary for animals to sustain life activities. Accordingly, dietary niche analysis facilitates the exploration of foraging strategies and interspecific relationships among wildlife. The vegetation succession has reduced understory forage resources (.

This 11-year case study describes the acoustic behaviour of a resident Indian Ocean humpback dolphin during commercial swim-with-dolphin activities in Mozambique. Combining data collected using low-cost action cameras with full bandwidth hydrophone recordings, we identified a temporally stable stereotyped whistle contour that met the SIGnature IDentification bout criteria. This whistle was produced with potential information-enhancing features (bi-phonation and subtle variations in frequency modulation).

We observed a novel, nocturnal cleaning interaction between a cleaner shrimp (Genus ) and the giant moray eel () on a lagoonal patch reef in Moorea, French Polynesia. Over the course of an 85-min foraging bout (recorded on video by a snorkeler), we observed three separate, stereotyped cleaning interactions between and a cleaner shrimp in the genus Urocaridella (which surveys of Moorea biodiversity previously visually identified as ). During these interactions, the shrimp would slowly crawl along one of the eel's flanks towards its head, enter its mouth, emerge on the other side of its head, then crawl back towards the reef along the eel's opposite flank, often causing it to jolt in response.

and are a sister species pair that have been used as a model for studies of reproductive isolation and speciation for almost 100 years owing to their close evolutionary history, well characterized genetic differences, and overlapping geographic distribution. There are extensive analyses of both pre- and post-zygotic isolation, including studies of courtship divergence, conspecific sperm precedence (CSP) and how reinforcement by natural selection may or may not act to strengthen isolation in sympatry. Post-zygotic analyses explore the underlying mechanics of reproductive isolation; how inversions may give rise to initial speciation events and misexpression of key genes typically found within inversion regions render hybrid offspring unfit or inviable.
