Five men in a methadone treatment program who were also receiving desipramine had significantly higher desipramine serum levels when taking both drugs than when taking the antidepressant alone. Monitoring of desipramine serum levels may be useful with such patients.

Depression is a growing global crisis, with females at a higher rate of diagnosis than males. While the percentage of patients on prescribed antidepressants have tripled over the last two decades, we are still at a crossroad where the discrepancy lies between finding a drug to suit a patient and monitoring the abundance of it in the body to prevent unwanted side effects. Liquid Chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) has garnered the attention of clinicians as a technique to accurately monitor therapeutic drugs in human serum with high specificity and accuracy.

In this study, a new mode of gel electromembrane extraction (G-EME) namely as "Two-phase G-EME", is suggested for the sensitive quantification of five basic drugs (desipramine, clomipramine, trimipramine, citalopram and clozapine) in biological samples. Compared to classical G-EME which is based on aqueous-gel-aqueous layout, herein, the aqueous acceptor phase (AP) was replaced with organic solvent. Briefly, negative electrode was immersed into the organic AP (with low conductivity) and positive electrode into the aqueous donor phase (DP).

Ceramide-induced endothelial cell apoptosis boosts intestinal stem cell radiosensitivity. However, the molecular connection between these two cellular compartments has not been clearly elucidated. Here we report that ceramide and its related enzyme acid sphingomyelinase (ASM) are secreted by irradiated endothelial cells and act as bystander factors to enhance the radiotoxicity of intestinal epithelium.

The current study presents for the first time a combination of the gel electromembrane extraction (GEL-EME) and switchable hydrophilicity solvent-based homogeneous liquid-liquid microextraction (SHS-HLLME) methods which can be used as an efficient hyphenated extraction procedure. This coupled method, which was followed by GC-FID, was applied for quantification of antidepressants (desipramine, clozapine, and citalopram) in biological and wastewater samples. The effective parameters of both GEL-EME and SHS-HLLME procedures were optimized.
