Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization, Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan.

Background: Dementia is age-related with a significant genetic contribution, yet genome-wide association studies have not fully accounted for heritability. This discrepancy may in part be due to reliance on SNPs and small indels. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) data in the Japanese population may reveal population-specific susceptibility loci for dementia.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

The Jackson Laboratory, Bar Harbor, ME, USA.

Background: Mechanisms driving cerebrovascular decline during Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) are poorly understood. Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) is an enzyme in the folate/methionine pathway. Variants in MTHFR, notably 677C>T, are associated with ADRD.

Probing Berry Phase Effect in Topological Surface States.

Phys Rev Lett

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of High Field Laser Physics and CAS Center for Excellence in Ultra-intense Laser Science, Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai, 201800, China.

We have observed the Berry phase effect associated with interband coherence in topological surface states (TSSs) using two-color high-harmonic spectroscopy. This Berry phase accumulates along the evolution path of strong field-driven electron-hole quasiparticles in electronic bands with strong spin-orbit coupling. By introducing a secondary weak field, we perturb the evolution of Dirac fermions in TSSs and thus provide access to the Berry phase.

Quantum error correction (QEC) provides a practical path to fault-tolerant quantum computing through scaling to large qubit numbers, assuming that physical errors are sufficiently uncorrelated in time and space. In superconducting qubit arrays, high-energy impact events can produce correlated errors, violating this key assumption. Following such an event, phonons with energy above the superconducting gap propagate throughout the device substrate, which in turn generate a temporary surge in quasiparticle (QP) density throughout the array.

Resonant pumping of the electronic f-f transitions in the orbital multiplet of dysprosium ions (Dy^{3+}) in a complex perovskite DyFeO_{3} is shown to impulsively launch THz lattice dynamics corresponding to the B_{2g} phonon mode, which is dominanted by the motion of Dy^{3+} ions. The findings, supported by symmetry analysis and density-functional theory calculations, not only provide a novel route for highly selective excitation of the rare-earth crystal lattices but also establish important relationships between the symmetry of the electronic and lattice excitations in complex oxides.
