Allylic alcohols were directly used in Pd-catalyzed allylic alkylations of simple ketones under mild reaction conditions. The reaction proceeded smoothly at 20 °C by the concerted action of a Pd catalyst, a pyrrolidine co-catalyst, and a hydrogen-bonding solvent, and does not require any additional reagents. A computational study suggested that methanol plays a crucial role in the formation of the π-allylpalladium complex by lowering the activation barrier.

Carbon-fiber composites with thermoplastic matrices offer many processing and performance benefits in aerospace applications, but the long relaxation times of polymers make it difficult to predict how the structure of the matrix depends on its chemistry and how it was processed. Coarse-grained models of polymers can enable access to these long-time dynamics, but can have limited applicability outside the systems and state points that they are validated against. Methyl ketones, key building blocks widely used in diverse industrial applications, largely depend on oil-derived chemical methods for their production. Here, we investigated biobased production alternatives for short-chain ketones, adapting the solvent-tolerant soil bacterium as a host for ketone biosynthesis either by whole-cell biocatalysis or using engineered minicells, chromosome-free bacterial vesicles. Organic acids (acetate, propanoate and butanoate) were selected as the main carbon substrate to drive the biosynthesis of acetone, butanone and 2-pentanone.

The Zincke reaction and Birch reduction have been one of the few reactions that allow for ring opening of pyridines ever since the discovery of pyridine more than a century ago. This paper presents a new addition to the list of pyridine ring-opening reactions, reductive Zincke reaction, which affords saturated δ-amino ketones. Under the catalysis of a simple rhodium complex, pyridinium salts with diverse substituents are reduced with formic acid, ring-opened with water, transaminated with a secondary amine and further reduced to afford a wide range of δ-amino ketones, including those in which the alkane chain of the ketones is selectively deuterated or fluorinated.
