Skin cancer is caused by solar UVR, which is also essential for vitamin D production. DNA damage (thymine dimers: T-T dimers) and vitamin D (25(OH)D) synthesis are both initiated by solar UVB. We aimed to investigate the simultaneous adverse and beneficial effects of solar UVB exposure in holidaymakers. Sun-seekers and skiers (n=71) were observed over 6 days through on-site monitoring, personal diary entries, and recording of personal UVB exposure doses with electronic dosimeters. Urine and blood samples were analyzed for T-T dimers and 25(OH)D, respectively. The volunteers had a statistically significant increase in vitamin D. There were strong associations between UVB exposure and post-holiday levels of T-T dimers and vitamin D, as well as between post-holiday T-T dimers and vitamin D. We conclude that UVB-induced vitamin D synthesis is associated with considerable DNA damage in the skin. These data, on two major health predictors, provide a basis for further field studies that may result in better understanding of the risks and benefits of "real life" solar exposure. However, vitamin D status can be improved more safely through the use of vitamin D dietary supplements.

The impact of four clinically significant genetic variants of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) polymorphisms on the concentrations of nitric oxide [NO] and peroxynitrite [ONOO] has been given scant consideration. This study utilized a [NO]/[ONOO] ratio to determine the extent of endothelial dysfunction caused by these variations in the eNOS gene. The single nucleotide polymorphisms (T-786C, C-665T, and Glu298Asp) and a variable number of tandem repeats (intron 4 a/b/c) were genotyped in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC), using sanger sequencing and DNA electrophoresis, respectively.

In the theoretical screening of Singlet Fission rates in molecular aggregates, often the frontier molecular orbital model for dimers is employed. However, the dimer approach fails to account for recent experimental findings that suggest singlet fission progresses through a further intermediate state featuring two spatially separated, spin-correlated triplets, specifically a (T···T) state. We address this limitation by generalizing the often used frontier molecular orbital model for singlet fission by incorporation of both separated Charge Transfer (C···T) and (T···T) states as well as mixed triplet-charge transfer states, delivering analytic expressions for the diabatic matrix elements.

Group 14/16 adamantane-type hybrid clusters of the type [(RT)E] (T=group 14 element, E=group 16 element, R=organic group) have been reported to emit white-light when irradiated in an amorphous state with a continuous-wave (CW) infrared laser diode. This effect is enhanced if the cluster core is varied from a binary to a more complex composition. To further explore this phenomenon, we synthesized clusters with a multinary R/R'-T/T'-E/E' composition, including isolobal replacement of E with CH, in [(2-NpSi){CHSn(S)Ph}] (1, Np=naphthyl).
