Aim: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of direct selective laser trabeculoplasty (DSLT) on eyes with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and on primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) eyes at 1 year follow-up.

Methods: In this study, 54 patients affected by POAG (76) or PACG (28) undergoing DSLT were enrolled, for a total of 104 eyes. Before each treatment and at each follow-up visit, all subjects underwent a complete eye visit, including the collection of data regarding the number and type of topical medications prescribed for glaucoma.

Drug-induced gingival enlargement (DIGE) is an abnormal overgrowth that may occur as a side effect in some patients when calcium channel blockers, immunosuppressants, or anticonvulsants are taken. The prevalence of DIGE was shown to be 70% for phenytoin (30% for other anticonvulsant medicines) and 50-80% for cyclosporine. The usage of these medications is increasing as new indications emerge.

Intravenous fluids are among the most commonly prescribed drugs. Many preparations classified by composition as crystalloids or colloids, of natural or synthetic origin, are available in clinical practice. Guidelines favor crystalloids as first-choice fluids in most clinical situations, mainly because of the lack of advantage of using colloids in reducing mortality and organ complications and generating higher treatment costs.

Background: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can increase fluid retention and the risk of heart failure (HF). Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is known to increase the risk of cardiac disease, including HF. As part of a modern multimodal pain protocol, NSAIDs are commonly used in total knee arthroplasty (TKA), but the risk of NSAID use in TKA for T2DM patients is not well understood.
