Alzheimers Dement
December 2024
University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health, Madison, WI, USA.
Background: Exposures to environmental toxicants and pollutants occur at various points along the life course, with mounting evidence that late-life pollution exposure increases risk for neurological disease, including dementia. Although occupational hazards constitute a primary source of modifiable environmental exposure during the working years, there is little research examining the protracted effects of mid-life occupational exposure on late-life dementia risk.
Method: This study leveraged life course data from the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study (WLS) to evaluate the effects of mid-life occupational hazardous exposures on late-life dementia outcomes.

Background: Previous models of resilience to Alzheimer's Disease (AD) have relied on cross-sectional designs and inclusion of measures of neuropathology. Here, we present a novel modeling approach incorporating longitudinal data and the use of APOE and higher order interaction terms to approximate neuropathological resilience, vastly increasing participant diversity and statistical power. We validate this approach and report novel genetic associations with neuropathological resilience.

Objectives: A significant number of low-birth-weight neonates are born with aortic coarctation. Previous studies of early operation on these patients have shown a high hospital mortality and recurrence at 1 year. We reviewed our data to ascertain whether modern approaches allow better outcomes for these children.

Background: Heart failure (HF) is a complex syndrome associated with high morbidity and mortality and increased health care use. Patient education is key to improving health outcomes, achieved by promoting self-management to optimize medical management. Newer digital tools like SMS text messaging and smartphone apps provide novel patient education approaches.

Objective: Application of cluster analytic procedures has advanced understanding of the cognitive heterogeneity inherent in diverse epilepsy syndromes and the associated clinical and neuroimaging features. Application of this unsupervised machine learning approach to the neuropsychological performance of persons with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) has yet to be attempted, which is the intent of this investigation.
Methods: A total of 77 JME participants, 19 unaffected siblings, and 44 unrelated controls, 12 to 25 years of age, were administered a comprehensive neuropsychological battery (intelligence, language, memory, executive function, and processing speed), which was subjected to factor analysis followed by K-means clustering of the resultant factor scores.
