Published: June 2014

Nanowire coils of organometallic coordination polymers have been synthesized for the first time by using the emulsion periphery polymerization technique. An amphiphilic triblock copolymer terminated with inclusion complex of β-cyclodextrin and 4,4'-bipyridine self-assembles into oil-in-water emulsion in a toluene/water mixture. Subsequent coordination of bipyridine with Ni(II) in periphery of emulsions results in the formation of coordination polymer nanowire coils. The nanowire coils are composed of nanowires with diameter of 2 nm. Nanowire coils exhibit enhanced thermal stability in contrast to their parent triblock copolymer. Interestingly, nanowire coils are capable of encapsulating organic cargoes. Encapsulated cargoes can be selectively extracted from nanowire coils without damaging nanowire coils. Nanowire coils are potential candidates for encapsulating and controlled release of organic cargoes.

Article Synopsis
  • The study presents a method for 3D mapping temperatures in cryogenic environments using a Raman-based distributed temperature sensor with telecom fibers and superconducting nanowire single photon detectors (SNSPDs).
  • The device achieves a temperature sensing capability down to (48 ± 2) K by coiling a test fiber around stages of a liquid helium-cooled cryostat, leveraging the low dark count rates of SNSPDs.
  • The technique is used to monitor temperature gradients in a hollow aluminum sample during nitrogen cooling, demonstrating potential applications in superconducting, quantum computing, and aerospace instrumentation with a spatial resolution of centimeters.

Spatiotemporal Landscape for the Sophisticated Transformation of Protein Assemblies Defined by Multiple Supramolecular Interactions.

Precise protein assemblies not only constitute a series of living machineries but also provide an advanced class of biomaterials. Previously, we developed the inducing ligand strategy to generate various fixed protein assemblies, without the formation of noncovalent interactions between proteins. Here, we demonstrated that controlling the symmetry and number of supramolecular interactions introduced on protein surfaces could direct the formation of unspecific interactions between proteins and induce various nanoscale assemblies, including coiling nanowires, nanotubes, and nanosheets, without manipulation of the protein's native surfaces.

Stretchable configuration occupies priority in devising flexible conductors used in intelligent electronics and implantable sensors. While most conductive configurations cannot suppress electrical variations against extreme deformation and ignore inherent material characteristics. Herein, a spiral hybrid conductive fiber (SHCF) composed of aramid polymeric matrix and silver nanowires (AgNWs) coating is fabricated through shaping and dipping processes.

State Key Laboratory for Modification of Chemical Fibers and Polymer Materials, College of Materials Science & Engineering, Donghua University, 2999 Renmin Road, Shanghai 201620, China.

Semiconductor yarns with unique functional characteristics have great potential applications in next-generation electronic devices. However, scalable inorganic semiconductor yarns with excellent mechanical and electrical properties, and environmental stability have not been discovered. In this study, we explored a unique fluid-spinning strategy to obtain a series of scalable inorganic semiconductor yarns including neat and hybrid semiconductor yarns.

Circularly Polarized Plasmons in Chiral Gold Nanowires via Quantum-Mechanical Design.

Time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) simulations are conducted on a series of chiral gold nanowires to explore whether an enhancement of circular dichroism at the plasmon resonance is possible and identify its quantum-mechanical origin. We find that in linear two-dimensional chiral nanowires the dichroic response is suppressed by destructive interference of nearly degenerate components with opposite signs, pointing to this phenomenon as a common and likely origin of the difficulty encountered so far in achieving a plasmonic CD response in experiment and suggesting nevertheless that these opposite components could be "decoupled" by using multiwall arrangements. In contrast, we predict a giant dichroic response for nanowires with three-dimensional helical coiling.
