The 26th annual Barrels meeting was convened on the campus of the University of California San Diego, not far from the shores of the Pacific Ocean. The meeting focused on three main themes: the structure and function of the thalamic reticular nucleus, the neurovasculature system and its role in brain metabolism, and the origins and functions of cortical GABAergic interneurons. In addition to the major themes, there were short talks, a data blitz, and a poster session which highlighted the diversity and quality of the research ongoing in the rodent whisker-to-barrel system.

Sponges are key ecosystem engineers that shape, structure and enhance the biodiversity of marine benthic communities globally. Sponge aggregations and reefs are recognized as vulnerable marine ecosystems (or VMEs) due to their susceptibility to damage from bottom-contact fishing gears. Ensuring their long-term sustainability, preservation, and ecosystem functions requires the implementation of sound scientific conservation tools.

TiO has broad prospects in reducing the safety risks posed by emerging pollutants in water environments. However, the high recombination rate of photogenerated carriers limits the activity and photon utilization efficiency of TiO. In this study, mesoporous TiO (m-TiO) and ultra-thin g-CN nanosheets were composited using a hydrothermal method, with the m-TiO tightly and uniformly wrapped by g-CN.

Reliable estimates of low flow and flood discharge at ungaged locations are required for evaluating stream flow alteration, designing culverts and stream crossings, and interpreting regional surveys of habitat and biotic condition. Very few stream gaging stations are located on small, remote streams, which typically have complex channel morphology. Adequate gaging is also lacking on larger streams that are remote, smaller than those typically gaged, or have channel morphology not conducive to installation of gages.

Solar photovoltaic (PV) conversion has become a key area in today's energy supply. However, incomplete utilization of the PV cell bandgap results in the conversion of photon energy outside the bandgap into waste heat, reducing the overall efficiency. Improving spectral utilization efficiency and mitigating the effects of PV waste heat are top priorities.
