Shengxian Decoction (SXT), a classic Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) prescription, consists of five TCMs: Astragali Radix, Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, Bupleuri Radix, Platycodonis Radix (PG), and Cimicifugae Rhizoma. SXT has been demonstrated to show good therapeutic effects on the cardiovascular system. A metabolomic approach was applied to study its therapeutic mechanisms and the synergistic properties of PG. UPLC-Q-TOF/MS based metabolomic profiling was adopted to assess the intervention effects of SXT, SXT-PG (SXT lacking PG) and PG, on chronic heart failure (CHF) rats. Betaloc was used as a positive control drug. A supervised discriminant technique (PLS-DA) was used to visualize the difference in global metabolic profiles within all experimental groups. Some significantly changed metabolites, such as carnitines, long-chain fatty acids and sphinganines, were identified, and the biochemical alterations of these were related to the disturbance in serum metabolic profiling of CHF rats. Furthermore, the metabolomics study demonstrated that the administration of SXT, but neither SXT-PG or PG alone, gave satisfactory curative effects on CHF through partially regulating the perturbed metabolic pathways. These observations were demonstrated by histopathological, electrocardiogram and serum enzymatic investigations. All these results supported the TCM theory that PG possesses synergistic properties which promote the synergized herbs in SXT in CHF rats. Overall, this paper demonstrates that metabolomics offers opportunities to understand the therapeutic mechanisms and synergistic properties of TCM.

As shale gas is an unconventional energy source, it is believed to be essential for achieving green resource development and improving the energy supply-demand balance. However, owing to shale's substantial anisotropic properties and various microstructures, its gas flow characteristics and transport mechanisms are exceedingly complex. Therefore, accurately predicting gas permeability evolution in shale pores was considered to be important for energy development.

High-performance radiation-resistant lubricating materials (RRLMs) with nanostructures hold great promise for enhancing the irradiation tolerance because of their sinking effect of boundaries on defects. Despite recent advances, challenges remain in finding a nanostructure that exhibits both superior irradiation tolerance and excellent lubricant properties. Unlike traditional nanostructured composite materials that required complex predesign, herein, a MoS nanocrystals (NCs)/amorphous dual phase in subirradiation saturation (SIS) state was spontaneously formed during irradiation, exhibiting high irradiation resistance under the synergistic effect of "defect traps" by interfaces and edge dislocation.

Raman spectroscopy has demonstrated significant potential in molecular detection, analysis, and identification, particularly when it adopts single-molecule surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SM-SERS) substrates. A recent SM-SERS scheme incorporates two-fold Raman enhancement mechanisms: the electromagnetic enhancement enabled by a plasmonic nanogap hotspot formed from gold sphere nanoparticles sitting on a gold mirror and the chemical enhancement enabled by a two-dimensional material, WS, inserted into the nanogap. In this work we integrate multiple advanced concepts and techniques to achieve remarkable performance improvements of SM-SERS.

Ectoine, a cytoprotective compound derived from bacteria and categorized as a postbiotic, is increasingly recognized as a viable alternative to traditional therapeutic agents, frequently presenting considerable side effects. This extensive review underscores the effectiveness of ectoine as a postbiotic in managing conditions such as rhinosinusitis, atopic dermatitis, and allergic rhinitis, all while demonstrating a commendable safety profile. Its capacity to establish robust hydrogen bonds without compromising cellular integrity supports its potential application in anti-aging and cancer prevention strategies.

To significantly improve the tribological performance of epoxy resin (EP), a novel h-BN/MoS composite was successfully synthesized using spherical MoS particles with lamellar self-assembly generated through the calcination method, followed by utilizing the "bridging effect" of a silane coupling agent to achieve a uniform and vertically oriented decoration of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanosheets on the MoS surface. The chemical composition and microstructure of the h-BN/MoS composite were systematically investigated. Furthermore, the enhancement effect of composites with various contents on the frictional properties of epoxy coatings was studied, and the mechanism was elucidated.
