Relapse and stability after mandibular setback surgery one year postoperatively: a retrospective study.

Published: June 2014

Purpose: A retrospective evaluation was performed of dentoalveolar and skeletal stability 1 year after mandibular setback surgery using intraoral vertical subcondylar osteotomy (IVSO) combined with intermaxillary fixation.

Patients And Methods: Twenty-eight patients (16 men, 12 women) with skeletal Angle Class III malocclusions were included. Mean age at start of treatment was 23.9 years. All patients underwent combined surgical and orthodontic treatment. Dental casts and cephalometric measurements were performed for each patient before orthodontic treatment and at 8 weeks and 1 year after surgery.

Results: Treatment changes from 8 weeks to 1 year after surgery were small but significant for the angular relationship between the maxilla and the mandible in the sagittal plane (ANB) (mean difference, -0.5 mm; P = .021), Wits appraisal (mean difference, -0.7 mm; P = .044), the inclination of the mandible in relation to the nasion-sella line (ML-NSL) (mean difference, -0.8 mm; P = .010), and the inclination of the lower incisors in relation to the nasion-point B line (Li-NB) (mean difference, -0.6 mm; P < .001). These findings for cephalometric values indicated a small skeletal relapse in sagittal and vertical relations. No significant dentoalveolar relapse occurred according to the dental cast evaluations.

Conclusion: The results clearly show that orthodontic treatment combined with IVSO provides a stable dental and skeletal result 1 year after treatment.

A novel appliance for Class II dentoalveolar correction.

J Orthod

January 2025

Private Practice, Jerusalem, Israel.

In recent years, a segmental approach to Class II correction has gained popularity among orthodontists. This concept is best represented by the Carrière Motion 3D™ Class II Appliance (CMA), which is an efficient and effective appliance for the treatment of Class II malocclusions. Although it is original and innovative, it also has some inherent flaws that can potentially interfere with its daily use.

Dental caries is a common disease resulting from tooth demineralization caused by bacterial plaque. Probiotics have shown great potential against caries by regulating the balance of oral flora. However, obstacles such as poor colonization and lysozyme sensitivity in oral cavity hinder their further application.

Objective: Dental occlusion and the alignment of the dentition play crucial roles in producing speech sounds. The Arabic language is specifically complex, with many varieties and geographically dependent dialects. This study investigated the relationship between malocclusion and speech abnormalities in the form of misarticulations of Arabic sounds.

Background: Minimally invasive dentistry is now becoming the forefront of restorative dentistry, involving less traumatic treatment protocols, conservation of tooth structure and surrounding tissues, enhancing the long-term survivability of treated teeth, and improving the overall quality of life for patients.

Objective: The current case report was conducted to evaluate acquiring deep subgingival interproximal carious lesions by the mean of thermacut bur gingivectomy, in terms of patient satisfaction through pain evaluation, Bleeding on Probing, Pocket Depth, Crestal Bone Level evaluation, and restoration evaluation using modified USPHS criteria.

Material And Methods: A patient with a deep proximal cavity in the posterior tooth was thoroughly examined and underwent Thermacut Bur Gingivectomy (TBG) after caries removal followed by direct resin composite restoration of the prepared cavity.

Patient-reported outcomes of zirconia dental implants: a systematic review and future directions.

J Patient Rep Outcomes

January 2025

Division of Oral Surgery and Orthodontics, Department of Dental Medicine and Oral Health, Medical University of Graz, Graz, Austria.

Purpose: Zirconia dental implants show excellent biocompatibility and tissue integration, low affinity for plaque, and favorable biomechanical properties. However, these objective measures do not adequately replicate the patient's perception. This systematic review evaluated the evidence on patient-reported outcome (PROs) in zirconia dental implant treatment.
