Mesothelioma is a rare neoplasm caused by asbestos exposure. The majority of mesotheliomas arise from the pleural lining of the thoracic cavity, but also involve the peritoneal and pericardial cavities. Another type of neoplasm referred to as pseudomesotheliomatous adenocarcinoma is rare. Most "pseudomesotheliomas" arise in the pleural tissue of the chest cavity and resemble pleural mesotheliomas, macroscopically and histologically. While most arise in the pleura, there are some that metastasize to the pleura from another site. We evaluated asbestos fiber concentrations in 20 cases of pseudomesotheliomatous lung cancer and found a significant number to contain an elevated concentration of asbestos in their lung tissue, which is similar with our study of 55 mesothelioma cases published in 1997. This would provide evidence that some pseudomesotheliomatous lung cancers are caused by asbestos.

A 50-year-old woman presented with left pleural effusion. A pleural fluid cell-block specimen and longitudinal lymph node needle biopsy suggested signet ring cell carcinoma (SRCC). Although computed tomography showed a consolidation shadow in the left lower lobe, a left lung biopsy could not be performed.

Endoscopic ultrasound with bronchoscope-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-B-FNA), a minimally invasive procedure, may be useful for the diagnosis of pseudomesotheliomatous (PMC) carcinoma because a sufficient amount of tissue can be obtained for diagnosis. This is the first report of PMC diagnosed using EUS-B-FNA. Our findings suggest that EUS-B-FNA may reduce the risk of dissemination for PMC.

Malignant mesothelioma (MM) has a wide range of clinical, radiologic, and pathologic presentations, mimicking lung cancer or interstitial lung diseases when predominantly involving the lung parenchyma. The case herein refers to a 79-year-old man, active smoker without asbestos exposure, incidentally discovered to have a pulmonary nodule in the right upper lobe (1.5 cm).

Aims: Nuclear protein in testis (NUT) carcinoma, an aggressive tumour driven by NUTM1 rearrangements, often involves the lung/mediastinum and shows squamous differentiation. We encountered an index patient with a thoracic NUT carcinoma diagnosed by molecular testing, showing extensive pleural involvement and diffuse thyroid transcription factor-1 (TTF-1) expression, initially suggestive of lung adenocarcinoma with pseudomesotheliomatous growth. We thus gathered an institutional series of thoracic NUT carcinomas to examine their pathological spectrum.
