Published: December 2010

Purpose: To develop and validate a method to prepare clarithromycin (CLM) microcapsules to mask the bitter taste and provide effective treatment, and evaluate the quality of microcapsules in detail, especially the in vitro and in vivo pharmacokinetics behavior.

Methods: CLM microcapsules were prepared using ethyl cellulose as matrix material by an emulsion solvent diffusion method. The physicochemical property, in vitro release study, sensory test and stability test were evaluated. Self-made CLM dry suspension or conventional tablets containing 250 mg of CLM were orally administered with 250 mL of water. The plasma concentration was determined and the pharmacokinetic parameters were calculated by non-compartmental methods.

Results: Stable microcapsules could be prepared using ethyl cellulose as matrix material. The quality evaluation of prepared microcapsules was qualified, and the pharmacokinetic parameters of dry suspensions and conventional tablets were as following. Cmax were 1.32±0.62 and 1.40±0.58 μg.ml(-1); Tmax were 3.51±0.54 and 2.01±0.42 h; AUC were 7.65±2.54 and 7.12±2.10 μg.h.ml(-1).

Conclusion: The preparation method is easy and applicable. The self-made CLM dry suspension containing microcapsules sufficiently alleviate the bitterness of commercial CLM dry suspension, but not decrease the bioavailability and have better effect for delaying drug release in healthy volunteers.

Cumulative link mixed-effects models in the service of remote sensing crop progress monitoring.

Biometrics

October 2024

Department of Mathematics, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, University Campus, Zografou, Athens 15784, Greece.

This study introduces an innovative cumulative link modeling (CLM) approach to monitor crop progress over large areas using remote sensing data. Two distinct models are developed, a fixed-effects CLM and a mixed-effects one that incorporates annual random effects to capture the inherent inter-seasonal variability. Inference is based on partial-likelihood with two law variations, the standard CLM based on the multinomial distribution and a novel one based on the product binomial distribution.

Access to safe drinking water sources and appropriate sanitation facilities remains a dream in low and middle-income countries including South Africa. This study identified the origin of faecal pollution by using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) targeting host-specific Bacteroidales genetic markers to track the distribution of human-specific (BacHum) and animal-specific (cattle-BacCow, chicken-Cytb, pig-Pig-2-Bac, dog-BacCan) markers in water sources used by rural communities of the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM). Results revealed the prevalence of BacHum, BacCow, and BacCan in all surface water sources in Thulamela Local Municipality (TLM) and Collins Chabane Local Municipality (CLM) during wet (100%) and dry seasons (50-75%).

This study aimed at quantifying the impact of the concentration of four commercial sanitizers and temperature on mold spores inactivation. The sanitizers were based on the following fungicide molecules, ethanol (ARVO 21 SR), active chlorine (ARVO CLM 600), hydrogen peroxide (Nocolyse Food) and triamine (P3 Topax 960). Food plant spores were produced under a moderate water stress, 0.

Impact of the dynamic vegetation on climate extremes during the wheat growing period over China.

Sci Total Environ

May 2022

National Climate Center, China Meteorological Administration, Beijing, China. Electronic address:

Extreme temperature and precipitation indices have important implications for the crop growing season. Whether a coupled regional model with carbon-nitrogen cycling (CN) and vegetation dynamics (DV) can better represent these indices during the growing season compared with a model without these modules remains unknown. This study evaluates the performance of extreme indices in three wheat planting regions (including northeast spring wheat, north winter wheat and south winter wheat regions) over China in the period of 1990-2009 using the Regional Climate Model (RegCM) coupled with the Community Land Model (CLM), which include CN and DV.

Electronic address:

Simultaneous removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the process of enhancement of sludge dewaterability via oxidation of hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and flocculation of Fe by Fe-catalyzing O were investigated as a novel research focus. The results showed that capillary suction time (CST) and water content of dewatered sludge cake (Wc) were reduced from 57.9 s and 85.
