The marine alkaloid norzoanthamine is a candidate drug for osteoporosis treatment. Due to its structural complexity, simplified analogues possessing similar biological activities are needed for further research. Recently, we found that the bisaminal unit, representing two-thirds of the original structure, is a bioactive equivalent. We synthesized three kinds of further truncated norzoanthamines and evaluated their collagen protection activities. No analog with collagen protection activity comparable to that of the bisaminal unit was found. Thus, we confirmed the importance of the bisaminal unit for the collagen protection activity. Furthermore, we found that the recognition tolerance of the substrate collagen is relatively large by comparing both enantiomers.

Combination of rapamycin and adipose-derived mesenchymal stromal cells enhances therapeutic potential for osteoarthritis.

Stem Cell Res Ther

January 2025

IRMB, Univ Montpellier, INSERM, CHU St Eloi, 80 AV A Fliche, 34295-Cedex-05, Montpellier, France.

Background: The regenerative potential of mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (MSCs) has been extensively studied in clinical trials in the past decade. However, despite the promising regenerative properties documented in preclinical studies, for instance in osteoarthritis (OA), the therapeutic translation of these results in patients has not been fully conclusive. One factor contributing to this therapeutic barrier could be the presence of senescent cells in OA joints.

The present study intended to investigate the properties of collagen peptide (CP)-astragaloside (AG) nanocomplexes (CPANs) improved oxidized hydroxypropyl starch (OHS)/chitosan (CS) (OC) film and to explore the preservation of chilled beef. The results indicated that AG significantly enhanced the stability, antioxidant capacity, and antibacterial properties of CP through mechanisms like static quenching and hydrophobic interactions. The incorporation of CPANs improved thickness, swellability, and water vapor blocking, UV-blocking and mechanical properties, antioxidant and antibacterial activity of OC film.

Biologically-oriented alveolar ridge preservation to correct bone dehiscence at immediate implant placement.

Clin Adv Periodontics

January 2025

Operative Unit of Dentistry, Azienda Unità Sanitaria Locale, Ferrara, Italy.

Background: The purpose of the present case study is to describe the application of a modification of the Biologically-oriented Alveolar Ridge Preservation (BARP) principles in cases of peri-implant bone dehiscence (PIBD) due to a compromised alveolus at immediate implant placement (IIP).

Methods: The technique is based on the stratification of three layers: a deep layer with a collagen sponge (CS) in the apical part of the alveolus (where the buccal bone plate was still present) to support the blood clot; a graft layer to correct the PIBD; and a superficial collagen layer to cover the graft thus providing space and enhancing clot/graft stability. Healing was obtained by primary closure.

Deciphering key nano-bio interface descriptors to predict nanoparticle-induced lung fibrosis.

Part Fibre Toxicol

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Radiation Medicine and Protection, School of Radiation Medicine and Protection, Suzhou Medical School, Soochow University, Suzhou, Jiangsu, 215123, China.

Background: The advancement of nanotechnology underscores the imperative need for establishing in silico predictive models to assess safety, particularly in the context of chronic respiratory afflictions such as lung fibrosis, a pathogenic transformation that is irreversible. While the compilation of predictive descriptors is pivotal for in silico model development, key features specifically tailored for predicting lung fibrosis remain elusive. This study aimed to uncover the essential predictive descriptors governing nanoparticle-induced pulmonary fibrosis.

Catechol redox maintenance in mussel adhesion.

Nat Rev Chem

January 2025

Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, University of California Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, CA, USA.

Catechol-functionalized proteins in mussel holdfasts are essential for underwater adhesion and cohesion and have inspired countless synthetic polymeric materials and devices. However, as catechols are prone to oxidation, long-term performance and stability of these inventions awaits effective antioxidation strategies. In mussels, catechol-mediated interactions are stabilized by 'built-in' homeostatic redox reservoirs that restore catechols oxidized to quinones.
