Catenated networks exclusively composed of intertwining rings were first envisioned as "Olympic gels" by Pierre-Gilles de Gennes four decades ago but have not been successfully prepared in artificial materials yet due to the challenge in synthesis. Herein, we present a bio-inspired, evaporation-assisted strategy to address this issue. In our design, the evaporation of liquid catalysts that induce ring-chain equilibrium of polymer systems drives macrocycles to encounter and assists their catenation through reversible cyclization.

Compliant mechanisms with reconfigurable degrees of freedom are gaining attention in the development of kinesthetic haptic devices, robotic systems, and mechanical metamaterials. However, available devices exhibit limited programmability and form-customizability, restricting their versatility. To address this gap, we propose a metastructure concept featuring reconfigurable motional freedom and tunable stiffness, adaptable to various form factors and applications.

Environmental protection, especially fouling protection, is a very topical and wide-ranging issue. This review explores the development, molecular design, and nanoarchitectonics of sol-gel-based hybrid coatings for antifouling applications. These coatings combine inorganic and organic materials, offering enhanced stability and adaptability, making them ideal for protecting surfaces from fouling.

They maintain stability through short-range attractive forces and their material properties are tunable by external forces. Combining persistent homology analyses and simulations of three-dimensional colloidal gels doped with active particles, we reveal novel dynamically evolving structures of colloidal gels.
