Purpose: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic inflammatory disease, in which T-Lymphocytes induce apoptosis of basal keratinocytes, leading to the formation of symptomatic lesions. It is assumed that blocking the cell death program and enhancing cell proliferation would be crucial to the healing process. The aim of the study was to verify the efficacy of Photobiomodulation (PBM) in OLP management, by evaluating the effects of laser irradiation on the processes of apoptosis and cell proliferation.

The maize mTERF18 regulates transcriptional termination of the mitochondrial nad6 gene and is essential for kernel development.

J Genet Genomics

January 2025

National Engineering Laboratory of Crop Stress Resistance, College of Life Science, Anhui Agricultural University, Hefei, Anhui 230036, China. Electronic address:

Mitochondria are semi-autonomous organelle present in eukaryotic cells, containing their own genome and transcriptional machinery. However, their functions are intricately linked to proteins encoded by the nuclear genome. Mitochondrial transcription termination factors (mTERFs) are nucleic acid-binding proteins involved in RNA splicing and transcription termination within plant mitochondria and chloroplasts.

A spatiotemporal and machine-learning platform facilitates the manufacturing of hPSC-derived esophageal mucosa.

Program in Epithelial Biology and Center for Definitive and Curative Medicine, Stanford University, Stanford, CA, USA. Electronic address:

Human pluripotent stem cell-derived tissue engineering offers great promise for designer cell-based personalized therapeutics, but harnessing such potential requires a deeper understanding of tissue-level interactions. We previously developed a cell replacement manufacturing method for ectoderm-derived skin epithelium. However, it remains challenging to manufacture the endoderm-derived esophageal epithelium despite possessing a similar stratified epithelial structure.

E3 ligase substrate adaptor SPOP fine-tunes the UPR of pancreatic β cells.

Genes Dev

December 2024

Institute for Diabetes, Obesity, and Metabolism, Department of Medicine, Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19146, USA;

The Cullin-3 E3 ligase adaptor protein SPOP targets proteins for ubiquitination and proteasomal degradation. We previously established the β-cell transcription factor (TF) and human diabetes gene PDX1 as an SPOP substrate, suggesting a functional role for SPOP in the β cell. Here, we generated a β-cell-specific deletion mouse strain ( ) and found that is necessary to prevent aberrant basal insulin secretion and for maintaining glucose-stimulated insulin secretion through impacts on glycolysis and glucose-stimulated calcium flux.

Patients diagnosed with metastatic basal cell carcinoma (BCC) have a poor prognosis. The current standard of care for adults with locally advanced or metastatic BCC who are not candidates for surgery or radiation therapy is treatment with hedgehog pathway inhibitors (HHIs). For patients who progress while on this therapy, further treatment options are limited.
