In poly[[μ3-2,2'-(disulfanediyl)dibenzoato-κ(5)O:O,O':O'',O'''](1,10-phenanthroline-κ(2)N,N')cadmium(II)], [Cd(C14H8O4S2)(C12H8N2)]n, the asymmetric unit contains one Cd(II) cation, one 2,2'-(disulfanediyl)dibenzoate anion (denoted dtdb(2-)) and one 1,10-phenanthroline ligand (denoted phen). Each Cd(II) centre is seven-coordinated by five O atoms of bridging/chelating carboxylate groups from three dtdb(2-) ligands and by two N atoms from one phen ligand, forming a distorted pentagonal-bipyramidal geometry. The Cd(II) cations are bridged by dtdb(2-) anions to give a two-dimensional (4,4) layer. The layers are stacked to generate a three-dimensional supramolecular architecture via a combination of aromatic C-H···π and π-π interactions. The thermogravimetric and luminescence properties of this compound were also investigated.

In recent years, pseudocapacitive materials have been investigated rigorously as they provide a unique pathway for realizing high-energy and high-power densities. However, innovative approaches involving rational design and synthesis of new materials are still vital to address concerns such as degradation, low conductivity, low cycling performance, high resistance, production cost, etc. Working in this direction, we report the cost-effective synthesis, characterization, and excellent pseudocapacitive behavior of a Cd(II)-based coordination polymer (COP) abbreviated as Cd(DAB).

Cinchonine is a quinoline alkaloid known for its antimalarial properties. Due to the advantages of using compounds of metal ions with alkaloids, a copper(II) compound with cinchonine was synthesized, and, for comparative purposes, a cadmium(II) compound with cinchonine. During the synthesis, the emerging interactions between the metal ion and cinchonine were studied.

The deposition of biomass-burning smoke water-soluble organic matter (BBS-WSOM) significantly affects the environmental behavior of heavy metals in aqueous environments. However, the interactions between BBS-WSOM and heavy metals at the molecular level remain unknown. Two new two-dimensional (2D) coordination polymers (CPs), namely, poly[diaqua[μ-2,2'-(1,3,5,7-tetraoxo-1,2,3,5,6,7-hexahydropyrrolo[3,4-f]isoindole-2,6-diyl)diacetato-κO:O':O'':O''']cadmium(II)], [Cd(CHNO)(HO)] (1), and poly[[tetraaqua[μ-2,2'-(1,3,5,7-tetraoxo-1,2,3,5,6,7-hexahydropyrrolo[3,4-f]isoindole-2,6-diyl)diacetato-κO:O':O'':O'''][μ-2,2'-(1,3,5,7-tetraoxo-1,2,3,5,6,7-hexahydropyrrolo[3,4-f]isoindole-2,6-diyl)diacetato-κO:O']dizinc(II)] dihydrate], {[Zn(CHNO(HO)]·HO} (2), have been synthesized by the microwave-irradiated reaction of Cd(CHCOO)·2HO and Zn(CHCOO)·2HO, respectively, with N,N'-bis(glycinyl)pyromellitic diimide {BGPD, namely, 2,2'-(1,3,5,7-tetraoxo-1,2,3,5,6,7-hexahydropyrrolo[3,4-f]isoindole-2,6-diyl)diacetic acid, HL}. In the crystal structure of 1, the Cd ion is six-coordinated by four carboxylate O atoms from four symmetry-related L dianions and two coordinated water molecules, furnishing an octahedral coordination geometry. The bridging L dianion links four symmetry-related Cd cations into a 2D layer-like structure with a 3,4-connected bex topology.

Glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP) is a significant component in the sequestration of heavy metal in soils, but its mechanisms for metal adsorption are poorly known. This study combined spectroscopic data with molecular docking simulations to reveal metal adsorption onto GRSP's surface functional groups at the molecular level. The EXAFS combined with FTIR and XPS analyses indicated that the adsorption of Cd(II), Sr(II), and Ni(II) by GRSP occurred mainly through the coordination of -OH and -COOH groups with the metal.
