Haptic exploratory procedures (EPs) are prototypical hand movements that are linked to the acquisition of specific object properties. In studies of haptic perception, hand movements are often classified into these EPs. Here, we aim to investigate several EPs in a quantitative manner to understand how hand dynamics and contact forces differ between them. These dissimilarities are then used to construct an EP identification model capable of discriminating between EPs based on the index finger position and contact force. The extent to which the instructed EPs were distinct, repeatable, and similar across subjects was confirmed by showing that more than 95 percent of the analyzed trials were classified correctly. Finally, the method is employed to investigate haptic exploratory behavior during similarity judgments based on several object properties. It seems that discrimination based on material properties (hardness, roughness, and temperature) yields more consistent classification results compared to discrimination based on the acquisition of shape information.

Objective: Targeted transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (tTENS) is a non-invasive neural stimulation technique that involves activating sensory nerve fibers to elicit tactile sensations in a distal, or referred, location. Though tTENS is a promising approach for delivering haptic feedback in virtual reality or for use by those with somatosensory deficits, it was not known how the perception of tTENS might be influenced by changing wrist position during sensorimotor tasks.
Approach: We worked with 12 able-bodied individuals and delivered tTENS by placing electrodes on the wrist, thus targeting the ulnar, median, and radial nerves, and eliciting tactile sensations in the hand.

Previous research has shown that integrating haptic feedback can improve immersion and realism in automotive VR applications. However, current haptic feedback approaches primarily focus on a single feedback type. This means users must switch between devices to experience haptic stimuli for different feedback types, such as grabbing, collision, or weight simulation.

Both visual and haptic softness perception have recently been shown to have multiple dimensions, such as deformability, granularity, fluidity, surface softness, and roughness. During haptic exploration, people adjust their hand motions (exploratory procedures, EPs) based on the material qualities of the object and the particular information they intend to acquire. Some of these EPs are also shown to be associated with perceived softness dimensions, for example, stroking a silk blouse or applying pressure to a pillow.

Humans can use prior information to optimize their haptic exploratory behavior. Here, we investigated the usage of visual priors, which mechanisms enable their usage, and how the usage is affected by information quality. Participants explored different grating textures and discriminated their spatial frequency.

In everyday life we frequently make simple visual judgments about object properties, for example, how big or wide is a certain object? Our goal is to test whether there are also task-specific oculomotor routines that support perceptual judgments, similar to the well-established exploratory routines for haptic perception. In a first study, observers saw different scenes with two objects presented in a photorealistic virtual reality environment. Observers were asked to judge which of two objects was taller or wider while gaze was tracked.
