Central venous catheter-related thrombosis is a frequent non-infectious complication, typically associated with catheter dysfunction and hemodialysis inadequacy. Central venous catheters (CVCs) are categorized into non-tunnelled and tunnelled types, wherein the choice depends on patient's clinical conditions and the diagnostic and therapeutic workup. Tunnelled CVCs (tCVCs) are sought whenever an arteriovenous fistula is unfeasible or as primary access in patients with poor prognosis.

Background: Activated clotting time (ACT) measurements are frequently used to monitor unfractionated heparin activity during noncardiac arterial procedures (NCAP). Accuracy of ACT-guided heparinization is mandatory to prevent heparin under and overdosing, thereby minimizing thrombo-embolic complications (TECs) and bleeding risk. The main objective of this study was to investigate accuracy of ACT to monitor heparin activity during NCAP using the Hemostasis Management System Plus (HMS) with high-range (HR) cartridges.

Portal vein thrombosis (PVT) is one of the common complications of cirrhosis. The incidence of PVT correlates with liver disease severity-higher incidence in patients with Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP) C, large spontaneous portosystemic shunts, hepatofugal portal flow, and in the presence of hepatocellular carcinoma. PVT may worsen ascites, increase the risk and poor control of variceal bleeding.

: Pulmonary embolism (PE) incidence has been increasing in the last 10 years. Computed thoracic pulmonary angiography (CTPA) had a major role in PE diagnosis and prognosis. The main purpose of this study was as follows: the prognostic value of a CTPA parameter, pulmonary artery obstruction index (PAOI), in PE risk assessment and the predictive accuracy of biomarkers, D-dimer and cardiac Troponin T (c-TnT), in 7-day mortality.
