The intricate relationships between parasites and hosts encompass a wide range of levels, from molecular interactions to population dynamics. Parasites influence not only the physiological processes in the host organism, but also the entire ecosystem, affecting mortality of individuals, the number of offspring through parasitic castration, and matter and energy cycles. Understanding the molecular mechanisms that govern host-parasite relationships and their impact on host physiology and environment remains challenging.

The idea of using pathogens to control pests has existed since the end of the 19th century. Enterobacteria from the genus , discovered at that time, are the causative agents of many serious diseases in mammals often leading to death. Mostly, the strains of are able to infect a wide spectrum of hosts belonging to vertebrates, but some of them show host restriction.

Plants have evolved elaborate mechanisms to detect neighboring plants, which typically involve the perception of "cues" inadvertently produced by the neighbor. Strigolactones are hormonal signaling molecules that are also exuded into the rhizosphere by most flowering plant species to promote arbuscular mycorrhizal symbioses. Since flowering plants have an endogenous perception system for strigolactones, strigolactones are obvious candidates to act as a cue for neighbor presence, but have not been shown to act as such.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the genetic factors influencing COVID-19 severity using a cohort of 840 patients from Russia, aiming to address challenges of cohort size and genome coverage in previous research.
  • While no significant gene or pathway-level associations were found, the researchers identified eleven candidate loci linked to various quantitative traits in COVID-19 patients.
  • Notably, a risk score derived from certain genetic variants was able to predict hospitalization severity and outcomes, showcasing the potential of using quantitative traits for identifying genetic risk factors in COVID-19 research.

Insoluble protein aggregates with fibrillar morphology called amyloids and β-barrel proteins both share a β-sheet-rich structure. Correctly folded β-barrel proteins can not only function in monomeric (dimeric) form, but also tend to interact with one another-followed, in several cases, by formation of higher order oligomers or even aggregates. In recent years, findings proving that β-barrel proteins can adopt cross-β amyloid folds have emerged.
