Published: December 2016

Geriatric education is a required component of internal medicine training. Work hour rules and hectic schedules have challenged residency training programs to develop and utilize innovative teaching methods. In this study, the authors examined the use of academic detailing as a teaching intervention in their residents' clinic and on the general medicine inpatient wards to improve clinical knowledge and skills in geriatric care. The authors found that this teaching method enables efficient, directed education without disrupting patient care. We were able to show improvements in medical knowledge as well as self-efficacy across multiple geriatric topics.

Background: Phase four of the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI4) began in 2023. This time-period corresponded to MRI vendors introducing product sequences with compressed sensing (CS), cross-vendor adoption of arterial spin-labelling (ASL) and multi-band slice excitation, and hardware improvements (head-coils, increased gradient amplitudes). These advances enabled the acquisition of new imaging measures and reduced scan times.

Background: Several clinical guidelines and recommendations have been developed to improve the diagnostic process of patients with dementia, with the aim of optimising patient care and fostering a cost-effective use of resources. However, patient characteristics and organizational factors in clinical practice can lead physicians to deviate from recommendations. In this context, process mining (PM) is a powerful technique for evaluating the compliance of actual to ideal diagnostic pathways, but has never been used in the cognitive field.

Background: The goal of this study was to determine the incidence of dementia before age 65 years in a prospective study of WTC responders, and compare incidence among responders with severe exposures to debris versus responders not exposed to building debris or those who wore personalized protective equipment (PPE).

Methods: Data were collected in a congressionally mandated academic occupation-based medical monitoring program available to all verified WTC-exposed responders residing on Long Island, NY, most of whom are currently <65 years of age. WTC responders aged ≤60 years without dementia at the time of their first cognitive assessment were followed every 18 months on average, for up to five years.

Background: Primary care clinicians report limited self-efficacy for managing complex behavioral and psychological symptoms in persons with dementia (BPSD). Complementary approaches, the academic detailing model and the DICE Approach, improved self-efficacy for memory clinic clinicians and their teams to identify and manage BPSD. Methods guided by the RE-AIM (Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, Maintenance) / PRISM (Practical, Robust, Implementation and Sustainability Model) framework are shared for pre-implementation adaptation of this program for generalist primary care.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

NINDS, Bethesda, MD, USA.

Background: Although the success rate of novel treatments for CNS diseases is low, this has not limited the enthusiasm of academic and industry neuroscientists to undertake novel drug discovery approaches for the treatment of Alzheimer's Disease-Related Dementias (ADRD) due to the significant unmet need. A first major obstacle in the development of promising treatments for ADRD and other CNS disorders is the need for well-validated targets linked to the disease process. Partial and incomplete knowledge about the biology of the selected molecular target(s) often limit their chance to translate into successful drug discovery projects.
