In this comment, we point out that the tractions induced by interfacial energy, which are referred to as the tractions on the central axis curve of the DNA elastic rod presented by Huang (J. Biol. Phys. 37(1), 79-90, 2011), are incorrect. The correct tractions are provided in this literature. Further, with the use of the correct tractions, we present new numerical results, which for the values given by Zaixing Huang do not give rise to the physical behavior observed for DNA by the author.

In this paper, we demonstrate that torsional surface elastic waves can propagate along the curved surface of a metamaterial elastic rod (cylinder) embedded in a conventional elastic medium. The crucial parameter of the metamaterial rod is its elastic compliance s44(1)ω, which varies as a function of frequency ω analogously to the dielectric function εω in Drude's model of metals. As a consequence, the elastic compliance s44(1)ω can take negative values s44(1)ω<0 as a function of frequency ω.

This article presents a new parametric method for shaping flat transverse frame structural systems supporting thin-walled roofs made of flat sheets folded unidirectionally and transformed elastically to various shell forms. The parameterization was limited to one independent variable, that is the stiffness of the support joints. For different discrete values of simulated stiffness, the surface areas of the cross sections of the tensile and compressed elements and the section modulus of the bending elements were calculated so as to obtain the optimized work of the frame and its elements in the assumed load environment.

Granular hydrogels are injectable and inherently porous biomaterials assembled through the packing of microparticles. These particles typically have a symmetric and spherical shape. However, recent studies have shown that asymmetric particles with high aspect ratios, such as fibers and rods, can significantly improve the mechanics, structure, and cell-guidance ability of granular hydrogels.

Pedicle screws have long been established as the gold standard for spinal bone fixation. However, their fixation strength can be compromised in cases of low bone density, particularly in osteoporotic bone, due to the reliance on a micro-shape lock between the screw thread and the surrounding bone. To address this challenge, we propose augmenting conventional pedicles screws with a curved compliant anchor.

Buckling instabilities driven by tissue growth underpin key developmental events such as the folding of the brain. Tissue growth is disordered due to cell-to-cell variability, but the effects of this variability on buckling are unknown. Here, we analyze what is perhaps the simplest setup of this problem: the buckling of an elastic rod with fixed ends driven by spatially varying, yet highly symmetric growth.
