Article Abstract

We have studied the B̃ (2)A1-X̃ (2)B2 laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) spectrum of the jet-cooled F2BO radical for the first time. The transition consists of a strong 0(0)(0)band at 446.5 nm and eight weak sequence bands to shorter wavelengths. Single vibronic level emission spectra obtained by laser excitation of individual levels of the B̃ state exhibit two electronic transitions: a very weak, sparse B̃-X̃ band system in the 450-500 nm region and a stronger, more extensive set of B̃ (2)A1-à (2)B1 bands in the 580-650 nm region. We have also performed a series of high level ab initio calculations to predict the electronic energies, molecular structures, vibrational frequencies, and rotational and spin-rotation constants in the X̃ (2)B2, à (2)B1 and B̃ (2)A1 electronic states as an aid to the analysis of the experimental data. The theoretical results have been used as input for simulations of the rotationally resolved B̃ (2)A1-X̃ (2)B2 0(0)(0) LIF band and Franck-Condon profiles of the LIF and single vibronic level emission spectra. The agreement between the simulations obtained with purely ab initio parameters and the experimental spectra validates the geometries calculated for the ground and excited states and the conclusion that the radical has C2v symmetry in the X̃, Ã, and B̃ states. The spectra provide considerable new information about the vibrational energy levels of the X̃ and à states, but very little for the B̃ state, due to the very restrictive Franck-Condon factors in the LIF spectra.

A chlorine-substituted Criegee intermediate, ClCHOO, is photolytically generated using a diiodo precursor, detected by VUV photoionization at 118 nm, and spectroscopically characterized via ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis)-induced depletion of / = 80 under jet cooled conditions. UV-vis excitation resonant with a π* ← π transition yields a significant ground state depletion, indicating a strong electronic transition and rapid photodissociation. The broad absorption spectrum peaks at 350 nm and is attributed to contributions from both (∼70%) and (∼30%) conformers of ClCHOO based on spectral simulations using a nuclear ensemble method.

Electronic Spectroscopy of Ovalene: Reassignment of the ()- () Transition.

As part of our experiments to characterize solid -hydrogen (-H) as a matrix host for electronic spectroscopy with potential applications in the ongoing quest for the carriers of the diffuse interstellar bands (DIB), we studied dispersed fluorescence and fluorescence excitation spectra of ovalene (CH), a planar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) of symmetry. Although generally in good agreement with previously reported data for jet-cooled CH, our results, in conjunction with quantum-chemical calculations, indicate that the observed spectral progressions are associated with the ()-() electronic transition instead of the originally assigned - transition for CH in a supersonic jet, and that the previously reported origin band was misassigned and should be located at ∼21050 cm. The reassignment is further supported by the comparably long fluorescence lifetime of ∼1.

Laser Spectroscopic Characterization of Supersonic Jet-Cooled 2,6-Diazaindole (26DAI).

J Phys Chem A

October 2024

Department of Chemistry, IIT Hyderabad, Sangareddy 502284, Telangana, India.

The article presents a comprehensive laser spectroscopic characterization of a nitrogen-rich indole derivative, namely, 2,6-diazaindole (26DAI), in the gas phase. A supersonic jet-cooled molecular beam of 26DAI was characterized using two-color resonant two-photon ionization (2C-R2PI) and laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy (LIF) to investigate the electronic excitation. The S ← S origin transition was obtained at 33915 cm, which was red-shifted from that of one (indole) and two (7-azaindole) nitrogen-containing indole derivatives by 1317 and 713 cm, respectively.

Using a combination of resonant two-photon two-color ionization (R2C2PI) and laser-induced fluorescence/dispersed fluorescence spectroscopy, we have examined the  ″ ←  2″ transition of the resonance-stabilized α-hydrofulvenyl radical, produced from methylcyclopentadiene dimer in a jet-cooled discharge. Like the related 1,4-pentadienyl and cyclohexadienyl radicals, the α-hydrofulvenyl -state lifetime is orders of magnitude shorter than the predicted -value implies, indicative of rapid nonradiative decay. The transition is fully allowed by symmetry but considerably weakened by transition moment interference.

The high-resolution infrared spectrum of the fundamental band ν (ring breathing) of the chiral molecule propylene oxide (CHCHCHO) was recorded at room temperature and under jet-cooled conditions using a quantum cascade laser at 8 μm. The observed lines with quantum numbers ≤ 55 and ≤ 21 were assigned to strong - and -type bands, and some low transitions were classified as weak -type transitions. The lines were fitted using a Watsons A-reduced Hamiltonian in the I representation.
