We study formation of ostracism in a society from a game theoretical perspective. The dynamics of group formation is complicated in that the choices of the individuals and the form of the groups mutually affect each other in the process. A suggested simple model shows that individual efforts to increase his/her own sense of belonging is responsible for both growth of groups and creation of an outcast. Once a person happens to get behind in synchronizing with others, tendency to alienate him may grow among others, possibly making him left out in the end. Alienating minority occurs even when there is a penalty for disliking and people are encouraged to favor others. Considering that the target is accidentally picked, we can understand ostracism as an inherent part of the group formation, rather than a result of specific discrepancy among people. Another finding is that a single individual who seeks for unconditional unification of the society ("philanthropist") likely invites his/her own isolation from the society, while the existence of such person generally promotes coalition of others.

Objectives: This study aimed to establish a reproducible and minimally invasive rat model of temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ-OA) using intra-articular monoiodoacetic acid (MIA) injection, and to investigate the pathological mechanisms underlying TMJ-OA development, aimed at providing insights for potential clinical treatments.
Design: We compared the effects of single versus multiple MIA injections on body weight, pain behaviour, and condylar pathology in female Sprague-Dawley rats. We longitudinally assessed the progression of TMJ-OA over 5 weeks by evaluating condylar pathology and immunohistochemical staining.

Background: Globally, 75,000 maternal deaths occur each year from puerperal sepsis, with higher rates in low-income countries. In Ethiopia, puerperal sepsis is the fourth leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to identify determinants of puerperal sepsis among postpartum women admitted to public hospitals in Harar, eastern Ethiopia.

Objectives: In many circumstances, researchers and clinicians need short personality questionnaires that can be administered quickly, either because a patient's attentional abilities preclude the use of longer, more comprehensive questionnaires, or because the assessment of personality, while desirable, is not the primary focus of their approach. The purpose of this study was to validate two short forms of one of the personality questionnaires most widely used in international research, the Big Five Inventory (BFI-2), which uses 60 items to measure the Big Five personality factors: Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Negative Emotionality/Neuroticism, and Open-mindedness/Openness to Experience, plus 15 facets (three for each major factor). The 30-item short form (BFI-2-S) is intended to assess the five main factors and the 15 facets and the "extra-short" form (BFI-2-XS) in 15 items only allows the five big factors to be assessed.

Malignant astrocytomas are aggressive primary brain tumors characterized by extensive hypoxia-induced, mitochondria-dependent changes such as altered respiration, increased chymotrypsin-like (CT-L) proteasome activity, decreased apoptosis, drug resistance, stemness, and increased invasiveness. Mitochondrial Lon Peptidase 1 (LonP1) overexpression and increased CT-L proteasome activity are biomarkers of an aggressive high-grade phenotype and found to be associated with recurrence and poor patient survival. In preclinical models, small molecule agents targeting either LonP1 or the proteasome CT-L activity have anti-astrocytoma activity.

Although organometallic complexes of the late 3d elements are known to undergo both one- and two-electron reactions, their relative propensities to do so remain poorly understood. To gain direct insight into the competition between these different pathways, we have analyzed the unimolecular gas-phase reactivity of a series of well-defined model complexes [(Me3SiCH2)nM]- (M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu; n = 2 - 4). Applying a combination of tandem-mass spectrometry, quantum-chemical computations, and statistical rate theory calculations, we find several different fragmentation reactions, among which the homolytic cleavage of metal-carbon bonds and radical dissociations are particularly prominent.
