A volumetric approach for determining the fouling burden on surfaces is presented, consisting of a 3D camera imaging system with fine (5 μm) resolution. Panels immersed in an estuary on the southwest coast of Florida, USA were imaged and the data were used to quantify seasonal changes in the biofouling community. Test panels, which were submerged in seawater for up to one year, were analyzed before and after gentle scrubbing to quantify the biovolume of the total fouling community (ie soft and hard organisms) and the hard fouling community. Total biofouling ranged from 0.01 to 1.16 cm(3) cm(-2) throughout the immersion period; soft fouling constituted 22-87% of the total biovolume. In the future, this approach may be used to inform numerical models of fluid-surface interfaces and to evaluate, with high resolution, the morphology of fouling organisms in response to antifouling technologies.

To assess the choroidal vessels in healthy eyes using a novel three-dimensional (3D) deep learning approach. In this cross-sectional retrospective study, swept-source OCT 6 × 6 mm scans on Plex Elite 9000 device were obtained. Automated segmentation of the choroidal layer was achieved using a deep-learning ResUNet model along with a volumetric smoothing approach.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD), characterized by significant brain volume reduction, is influenced by genetic predispositions related to brain volumetric phenotypes. While genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have linked brain imaging-derived phenotypes (IDPs) with AD, existing polygenic risk scores (PRSs) based models inadequately capture this relationship. We develop BrainNetScore, a network-based model enhancing AD risk prediction by integrating genetic associations between multiple brain IDPs and AD incidence.

Background: Western and Mediterranean diets differentially affect cerebral cortical gene expression, brain structure, and socioemotional behavior in middle-aged female nonhuman primates (NHP) (Macaca fascicularis). In this study, we investigate the effect of diet on brain molecular composition.
Method: Using a machine learning approach, we quantified the impact of these diets on the presynaptic proteome in the lateral temporal cortex determined by synaptometry by time of flight (SynTOF) mass spectrometry and examined associations between the proteome, transcriptome, and an array of multisystem phenotypes.

Background: Consortium-wide studies of volumetric brain imaging measures with single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) have revealed numerous disease-risk SNPs and emphasized the significance of brain imaging phenotypes as preclinical markers (endophenotypes) for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Nevertheless, the bulk of these risk variants are in genomic regions that govern multiple genes, posing major challenges in fine-mapping strategies. Evolutionarily conserved transposable elements are master regulators of gene expression, and by studying these endogenous gene regulatory units in relation to AD endophenotypes, we aimed to better identify the disease-causal gene.
