This paper introduces the Special Issue of Neuropsychological Rehabilitation on Single Case Experimental Design (SCED) methodology. SCED studies have a long history of use in evaluating behavioural and psychological interventions, but in recent years there has been a resurgence of interest in SCED methodology, driven in part by the development of standards for conducting and reporting SCED studies. Although there is consensus on some aspects of SCED methodology, the question of how SCED data should be analysed remains unresolved. This Special Issues includes two papers discussing aspects of conducting SCED studies, five papers illustrating use of SCED methodology in clinical practice, and nine papers that present different methods of SCED data analysis. A final Discussion paper summarises points of agreement, highlights areas where further clarity is needed, and ends with a set of resources that will assist researchers conduct and analyse SCED studies.

Background: Acquired brain injury (ABI) leads to cognitive deficiencies, alteration of brain activity associated with an increase in slow-wave (delta and theta bands) power, and reduced fast-wave (alpha, beta, and gamma bands) power. To compensate for the cognitive deficits that impact autonomy and quality of life, patients in a chronic phase can benefit from cognitive intervention.
Objective: This study explores the effects of cognitive intervention on brain activity, measured by electroencephalography (EEG), and on executive functioning, assessed by the Test of Attentional Performance (TAP) battery.

Introduction: For several years, studies have been conducted on the contribution of social robots as an intervention tool for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). One of the early intervention models recommended by the French National Authority for Health is the Early Start Denver Model, an individualised, intensive programme based on play activities chosen by the child. While studies published in recent years suggest that robots provide benefits for autistic children in learning social interactions within a clinical setting, there is no scientific consensus on the widespread contribution and maintenance of their effects over time.

The use of multilevel models to combine and compare the results of multiple single-case experimental design (SCED) studies has been proposed about two decades ago. Since then, the number of multilevel meta-analyses of SCED studies steadily increased, together with the complexity of multilevel models used. At the same time, many studies were done to empirically evaluate the approach in a variety of situations, and to study how the flexibility of multilevel models can be employed to account for many complexities that often are encountered in SCED research, such as autocorrelation, linear and nonlinear time trends, specific designs, external event effects, multiple outcomes, and heterogeneity.
