Purpose: Monopolar electrosurgery is the gold standard for surgical preparation in thoracoscopic spine procedures. However, use of ultrasound scissors could decrease blood loss, accelerate the preparation time and improve patient safety, while minimizing operative costs. This trial compares both preparation techniques for ventral thoracoscopic spondylodesis.

Methods: The study design is an open, prospective, randomized, and double-blinded two-armed clinical trial performed in two centres. Forty-one patients with vertebral body fractures from T10 to L2 were included. Primary endpoint: preparation time. Secondary endpoints: blood loss, organ injuries, duration of hospitalization.

Results: Primary and secondary endpoints did not differ significantly between groups (p level 0.05). Increased blood loss (150 ml or more) was eliminated with ultrasound scissors (p = 0.0014).

Conclusions: Primary and secondary endpoints did not differ significantly between the two preparation techniques. The use of either ultrasound scissors or electric scalpel offers safe and effective preparation for thoracoscopic spine surgery.

Massive bleeding and bacterial infection of wounds may be life-threatening or even lead to death. Nowadays, gelatin-based hemostatic sponges have been widely used, but gelatin is not antibacterial and has poor structural stability. In this study, we mixed an antibacterial polypeptide, ε-poly-L-lysine (EPL), into gelatin.

Aging is a risk factor for several chronic conditions, including intervertebral disc degeneration and associated back pain. Disc pathologies include loss of reticular-shaped nucleus pulposus cells, disorganization of annulus fibrosus lamellae, reduced disc height, and increased disc bulging. Sonic hedgehog, cytokeratin 19, and extracellular matrix proteins are markers of healthy disc.

After tooth extraction, alveolar bone absorbs unevenly, leading to soft tissue collapse, which hinders full regeneration. Bone loss makes it harder to do dental implants and repairs. Inspired by the biological architecture of bone, a deformable SIS/HA (Small intestinal submucosa/Hydroxyapatite) composite hydrogel coaxial scaffold was designed to maintain bone volume in the socket.

Limited data are available on VWF activity (VWF:Act) and factor VIII (FVIII:C) levels during delivery after VWF/FVIII concentrate administration in women with von Willebrand disease (VWD). We aimed to evaluate treatment with a specific VWF/FVIII concentrate on factor levels in women with VWD during delivery and the postpartum period. A retrospective single-center study was conducted between January 1, 2008, and August 1, 2022.

Background And Aim: Post-hepatectomy liver failure (PHLF) after major hepatopancreatoduodenectomy (HPD) is a challenge to overcome. However, the appropriate target proportion of the future liver remnant (pFLR) to prevent severe PHLF in major HPD remains uncertain. This study aimed to determine the minimum pFLR required for safe major HPD.
