We present a thorough analysis of molecular adsorption of a toxic gas, H2S, on pristine, defective and N-substituted 2D-ZnO using first-principles simulations within density functional theory and the parameterized form of van der Waals (vdW) interaction. We find that the binding of H2S with pristine 2D-ZnO is relatively weak (adsorption energy EA = -29 to -36 kJ mol(-1)) as it is mainly through the vdW interaction. However, substitutional nitrogen doping in 2D-ZnO leads to a drastic increase in the adsorption energy (EA = -152 kJ mol(-1)) resulting in dissociation of H2S molecules. This originates fundamentally from a strong covalent bonding interaction between an unpaired electron in the p-orbital of nitrogen and an electron in the s-orbital of H. While O-vacancy in 2D-ZnO has little effect on its interaction with H2S at lower coverages, a strong interaction at higher coverages leads to splitting of H2S and formation of H2 molecules. Our work shows that 2D-ZnO is a promising material to facilitate capturing of toxic H2S from the environment and at the same time converting it to a green source of energy.

Direct sustainable conversion of hydrogen sulfide (HS) enables collaborative recovery of H and S resources via a metal-enhanced microwave plasma strategy, avoiding the hydrogen waste in the traditional Claus process. However, the metal size effect on microwave plasma property, the optimal process parameters, and the enhancement mechanism remain unclear in HS conversion. Herein, the optimal tungsten needle (diameter: 1 mm, length: 60 mm, and tip angle: 10°) is experimentally proven for intensifying microwave discharge in multi-mode cavities.

Periodontitis, a chronic disease, can result in irreversible tooth loss and diminished quality of life, highlighting the significance of timely periodontitis monitoring and treatment. Meanwhile, hydrogen sulfide (HS) in saliva, produced by pathogenic bacteria of periodontitis, is an important marker for periodontitis monitoring. However, the easy volatility and chemical instability of the molecule pose challenges to oral HS sensing.

Hydrogen sulfide (HS), a toxic gas abundant in natural gas fields and refineries, is currently being removed mainly via the Claus process. However, the emission of sulfur-containing pollutants is hard to be prevented and the hydrogen element is combined to water. Herein, we report an electron-mediated off-field electrocatalysis approach (OFEC) for complete splitting of HS into H and S under ambient conditions.

In clinical diagnostics, sensitive and accurate biomarker monitoring is greatly challenged by the limitations of false positive/negative errors in single-modal photoelectrochemical analysis. Herein, we propose a multimode immunoassay by integrating photoelectrochemical, colorimetric, and photothermal imaging analysis into one electrode. The immunosensors could simultaneously achieve three detection modes at one electrode, which provided a new pathway for the accurate detection of the target prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and circumvented false-positive or negative errors during the detection process.

Piezo-photocatalysis of ZnO nanostructures had recently well attracted due to their exceptional potential in degrading the antibiotics and scalable hydrogen production. Here, we have synthesized the Ce doped ZnO nanospheres in a facile wet chemical strategy. Dopant ions induced morphological evolution and optical bandgap tuning had observed in our experiment.
