In the present study, two commonly used catalysts in chemical pretreatment, sulfuric acid and sodium hydroxide, were tested to evaluate the effect of solid-to-liquid ratio on pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis. Solid to liquid ratio (S/L) was influential on sugars released with an increase in the S/L ratio between 0.03 and 0.2. Enzymatic digestibility of 0.25 M H2SO4 pretreated corncobs were released more sugars (415.12 mg/mL); whereas, corncobs pretreated with NaOH released 350.12 mg/mL of reducing sugars at S/L 0.05. Further, in comparison with NaOH pretreated corncobs, acid treated material substantially increased the accessibility and digestibility of cellulose during crude enzymatic hydrolysis (28.96 FPU) and released 398.95 mg/mL reducing sugars.

This study aimed to produce protein hydrolysates from superworm (Zophobas morio) flour using the enzymes alcalase (HA), protamex (HP), or flavourzyme (HF), and to characterize their nutritional composition, techno-functional properties, bioactive capacity, and bioaccessibility index. The enzymatic process increased the total amino acid and crude protein contents of the hydrolysates by approximately 36 % and 46 %, respectively, generating better foaming capacity, oil retention, and emulsification capacity, when compared to raw flour. Novel and simple spectrophotometric and distance based procedures for thiols (L-cysteine, N-acetylcysteine, and glutathione) determination in biological fluids and pharmaceuticals have been proposed based on their inhibitory action on the oxidation of catechol in the presence of Agaricus bisporus crude extract (ABE). The influence of L-glycine, L-alanine, L-proline, L-methionine, L-cystine, ascorbic acid, uric acid, and bilirubin on the thiol determination has been investigated.
