The rheological behavior of galactomannans in concentrated solutions was examined by using dynamic viscoelasticity measurements. Concentrated solutions of three galactomannans, guar gum, tara gum, and locust bean gum were prepared with an ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride as the solvent. Each galactomannan solution showed angular frequency dependence curves of the storage modulus and the loss modulus which were characteristic of a solution of entangled polymer chains. The molecular weight between entanglements (Me) was obtained from the plateau modulus and the concentration dependence of Me showed Me in the molten state (Me,melt) to be 4.6×10(3), 3.2×10(3), and 2.7×10(3) for guar gum, tara gum, and locust bean gum, respectively. It was found that the material constant Me,melt depends on the mannose/galactose ratio of the galactomannans. The number of monosaccharide units between entanglements in the molten state for the galactomannans varied within the range found for other polysaccharides such as cellulose and agarose in ionic liquids, suggesting that all the galactomannans take a random-coil conformation in ionic liquid solutions.

Diffusive evaporation dynamics in polymer solutions is ubiquitous.

Recent theory and experiments have shown how the buildup of a high-concentration polymer layer at a one-dimensional solvent-air interface can lead to an evaporation rate that scales with time as and that is insensitive to the ambient humidity. Using phase field modelling we show that this scaling law constitutes a naturally emerging robust regime, diffusion-limited evaporation (DLE). This regime dominates the dynamical state diagram of the system, which also contains regions of constant and arrested evaporation, confirming and extending understanding of recent experimental observations and theoretical predictions.

Continuous Electrochemical Carbon Capture via Redox-Mediated pH Swing─Experimental Performance and Process Modeling.

We investigate a continuous electrochemical pH-swing method to capture CO from a gas phase. The electrochemical cell consists of a single cation-exchange membrane (CEM) and a recirculation of a mixture of salt and phenazine-based redox-active molecules. In the absorption compartment, this solution is saturated by CO from a mixed gas phase at high pH.

Obligate root parasitic plants of the Orobanchaceae family exhibit an intricate germination behavior. The host-dependent germination process of these parasites has prompted extensive research into effective control methods. While the effect of biomaterials such as amino acids and microRNA-encoded peptides have been explored, the effect of double-stranded RNAs (dsRNAs) has remained unexamined during the germination process.

While CuS/TiO₂ has been previously synthesized and employed in a limited number of photodegradation studies, the current study investigated its effectiveness for TC degradation under UV-visible light irradiation. CuS is known to be a nontoxic, environmentally friendly material; hence, it has great potential as an alternative to CdS and CdSe, which are used conventionally as sensitizers. In this work, the CuS/TiO₂ photocatalysts achieved a maximum 95 % removal of TC at an initial concentration of 20 ppm, confirming the good utilization of active sites.

Molecular scale information is needed to understand ions coordination to mineral surfaces and consequently to accelerate the design of improved adsorbents. The present work reports on the use of two-dimensional correlation Fourier Transform infra-red spectroscopy (2D-COS-FTIR) and hetero 2D-COS-FTIR- X-ray diffraction (XRD) to probe the mechanism of Cr(VI) removal from aqueous solutions by activated carbon (AC) and its composite with PWO (AC-composite). The adsorption data at an initial Cr(VI) concentration of 320 mg L (320 ppm) revealed maximum adsorption capacities of 65 mg g for AC and 73 mg g for AC-composite, corresponding to removal percentages of 83 % and 94 %, respectively.
