Reaction of Cu(OAc)2·H2O and 1H-pyrazole-3,5-dicarboxylic acid dimethyl ester (Hdcmpz) in MeOH at room temperature afforded one tetranuclear Cu(II)/pyrazolate complex [{Cu2(μ-OAc)2}2(μ-dcmpz)2(μ-OAc)2] (1) in 89% yield. The similar reaction in refluxing MeOH produced a hexanuclear metallamacrocyclic Cu(II)/pyrazolate complex [{Cu(μ-dcmpz)}2(μ-OMe)2]3 (2) in 85% yield. Treatment of the same components under solvothermal conditions resulted in the formation of another tetranuclear Cu(II)/pyrazolate/carboxylate complex [{Cu(MeOH)}4(μ-mcccpz)4] (3, Hmcccpz = 5(3)-(methoxycarbonyl)-1H-pyrazole-3(5)-carboxylic acid) in 30% yield.

Synthesis, structures, and magnetic properties of four copper compounds with 2,2'-dinitrobiphenyl-4,4'-dicarboxylate.

Shanghai Key Laboratory of Green Chemistry and Chemical Processes, Department of Chemistry, East China Normal University, Shanghai 200062, China.

Four copper(II) coordination polymers of 2,2'-dinitrobiphenyl-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid (H(2)dnbpdc), with or without 4,4'-bipyridyl (bipy) as co-ligand, were synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and characterized crystallographically and magnetically. They are formulated as [Cu(2)(dnbpdc)(OH)(2)](n) (1), [Cu(Hdnbpdc)(2)(bipy)](n)·2nH(2)O (2), [Cu(2)(dnbpdc)(2)(bipy)(H(2)O)(2)](n)·2nH(2)O (3) and [Cu(3)(dnbpdc)(2)(bipy)(OH)(2)(H(2)O)](n)·nH(2)O (4). Compound 1 exhibits a 2D coordination network, in which infinite [Cu(μ-OH)(μ-COO)](n) chains are linked by the backbones of the dnbpdc(2-) ligands.

Copper-induced N-N bond cleavage results in an octanuclear expanded-core grid-like complex.

Reaction of copper(I) acetate and 4-amino-3,5-di(2-pyridyl)-1,2,4-triazole (adpt) in methanol under ambient conditions yields octanuclear [Cu(II)(8)(dpt)(4)(OH)(4)(OAc)(8)]; OAc = acetate anion, and dpt(-) = anion of deaminated adpt, 3,5-di(2-pyridyl)-1,2,4-triazolate. However, reaction of copper(ii) acetate with dptH gives tetranuclear [Cu(II)(4)(dpt)(2)(OH)(OMe)(OAc)(4)].

Three new polynuclear copperII complexes of 2-picolinic acid (Hpic), {[Cu2(pic)3(H2O)]ClO4}n (1), {[Cu2(pic)3(H2O)]BF4}n (2), and [Cu2(pic)3(H2O)2(NO3)]n (3), have been synthesized by reaction of the "metalloligand" [Cu(pic)2] with the corresponding copperII salts. The compounds are characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses and variable-temperature magnetic measurements. Compounds 1 and 2 are isomorphous and crystallize in the triclinic system with space group P, while 3 crystallizes in the monoclinic system with space group P21/n.
