The hydroxyapatite (HAp) samples in the presence of various amounts of ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) were prepared by sol-gel method. The effects of EDTA on the crystallinity, phase structure, chemical, micro-structural and dielectric properties of HAp samples were investigated. With the addition of EDTA, the average crystallite size of the HAp samples is gradually decreased from 30 to 22 nm and the crystallinity is in the range of 65-71%. The values of the lattice parameters (a and c) and volume of the unit cell are decreased by stages with the addition of EDTA. The dielectric parameters such as relative permittivity, dielectric loss and relaxation time are affected by the adding of EDTA. The alternating current conductivity of the as-synthesized hydroxyapatites increases with the increasing frequency and obeys the universal power law behavior. The HAp samples exhibit a non-Debye relaxation mechanism. The obtained results that the dielectrical parameters of the HAp sample can be controlled by EDTA.

Purpose Of Review: A major contributor to household air pollution (HAP) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is unclean cooking fuel. Improved cookstove technology (ICT) interventions have been promoted as a solution, but their impacts on health are unclear. Our aim is to conduct a systematic review to explore the impacts of ICT interventions on health outcomes in SSA.

The existing demand for the development of innovative multimodal imaging nanomaterial probes for biomedical applications stems from their unique combination of dual response modalities, , photoluminescence (PL) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In this study, for the first time, neodymium (Nd) and dysprosium (Dy) rare earth (RE) metal ions were co-doped into a hydroxyapatite (HAp) crystal lattice using a simple microwave-assisted synthesis technique to incorporate the essential properties of both the lanthanides in HAp. Theoretical as well as experimental studies were performed on novel Nd:Dy:HAp nanoparticles (NPs) to understand their photoluminescence and magnetic behaviour.

Background: The limited efficacy of the two recently approved malaria vaccines, RTS,S/AS01 and R21/Matrix- M™, highlights the need for alternative vaccine candidate genes. Plasmodium falciparum Reticulocyte Binding Protein Homologue 5 (Pfrh5) is a promising malaria vaccine candidate, given its limited polymorphism, its essential role in parasite survival, a lack of immune selection pressure and higher efficacy against multiple parasites strains. This study evaluated the genetic diversity of Pfrh5 gene among parasites from regions with varying malaria transmission intensities in Mainland Tanzania, to generate baseline data for this potential malaria vaccine candidate.

The quantitative characterization of the structure of biomineral surfaces is needed for guiding regenerative strategies. Current techniques are compromised by a requirement for extensive sample preparation, limited length-scales, or the inability to repeatedly measure the same surface over time and monitor structural changes. We aim to address these deficiencies by developing Calcium (Ca) K-edge Polarisation Induced Contrast X-ray Fluorescence (PIC-XRF) to quantify hydroxyapatite (HAp) crystallite structural arrangements in high and low textured surfaces.

Effects of Hydroxyapatite Additions on Alginate Gelation Kinetics During Cross-Linking.

Polymers (Basel)

January 2025

Department of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering, School of Chemical Engineering, Aalto University, 02150 Espoo, Finland.

Alginate hydrogels have gathered significant attention in biomedical engineering due to their remarkable biocompatibility, biodegradability, and ability to encapsulate cells and bioactive molecules, but much less has been reported on the kinetics of gelation. Scarce experimental data are available on cross-linked alginates (AL) with bioactive components. The present study addressed a novel method for defining the crosslinking mechanism using rheological measurements for aqueous mixtures of AL and calcium chloride (CaCl) with the presence of hydroxyapatite (HAp) as filler particles.
