Published: November 2014

The human SLC24 gene family contains five members encoding the NCKX1-5 proteins that function as K(+)-dependent Na⁺-Ca²⁺ exchangers. NCKX proteins have been shown to play critical roles in retinal rod and cone photoreceptors, olfactory neurons, epidermal melanocytes, and the retinal pigment epithelium. NCKX transcripts are also found in many other tissues, in particular throughout the brain, but their specific physiological roles yet need to be elucidated in most cases. Here, we focus on our current knowledge of NCKX transport function as has been described in detail only for in situ NCKX1 in the outer segments of retinal rod photoreceptors and on structure-function relationships elucidated for the NCKX2 isoform after expression of its (mutated) cDNA in cell lines.

Despite extensive research on the use of salts to enhance micellar growth, numerous questions remain regarding the impact of ionic exchange and molecular structure on charge neutralization. This study looks into how certain cations (Na, Ca, and Mg) affect the structure of a cocamidopropyl betaine CAPB and sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate SDBS surfactant mixture, aiming toward applications in targeted delivery systems. The mixture consists of a zwitterionic surfactant, cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB), and an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS), combined in varying molar ratios at a total concentration of 200 mM.

Quantum Thermodynamic Derivation of the Energy Resolution Limit in Magnetometry.

Phys Rev Lett

December 2024

University of Crete, Department of Physics, Heraklion 70013, Greece.

It was recently demonstrated that a multitude of realizations of several magnetic sensing technologies satisfy the energy resolution limit, which connects a quantity composed by the variance of the magnetic field estimate, the sensor volume and the measurement time, and having units of action, with ℏ. A first-principles derivation of this limit is still elusive. We here present such a derivation based on quantum thermodynamic arguments.

Non-Hermitian Topology in Hermitian Topological Matter.

Phys Rev Lett

December 2024

University of Tokyo, Institute for Solid State Physics, Kashiwa, Chiba 277-8581, Japan.

Non-Hermiticity gives rise to distinctive topological phenomena absent in Hermitian systems. However, connection between such intrinsic non-Hermitian topology and Hermitian topology has remained largely elusive. Here, considering the bulk and boundary as an environment and system, respectively, we demonstrate that anomalous boundary states in Hermitian topological insulators exhibit non-Hermitian topology.

To assess respiratory changes after neurally adjusted ventilatory assist (NAVA) initiation in preterm infants with evolving or established bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). Premature infants born less than 32 weeks gestation with evolving or established BPD initiated on invasive or non-invasive (NIV) NAVA were included. Respiratory data: PCO and SpO₂/FiO₂ (S/F) ratio before and at 4, 24, 48 h post-NAVA initiation were collected.

Hemolytic anemia (HA) is characterized by massive destruction of red blood cells (RBCs) and insufficient oxygen supply, which can lead to shock, organ failure, even death. Recent studies have preliminarily demonstrated the therapeutic effectiveness of whole blood exchange (WBE) in the management of acute hemolytic anemia and exhibited potential for reducing the duration of corticosteroid treatment, while the underlying mechanism of WBE therapy was not investigated in preclinical study. Hence, we investigate the therapeutic mechanisms of WBE in HA through established continued WBE therapy in rats creatively.
