Restricted-access materials (RAMs) have been broadly used for sample pretreatment in the chromatographic analysis of biological samples. In the present work, a novel internal surface reversed-phase (ISRP) RAM was prepared via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP). Octadecyl and 4-(chloromethyl)phenyl were immobilized on silica using a one-pot synthesis approach to form a reversed-phase layer to retain small hydrophobic molecules, allowing the modified silica to serve as a macro-initiator. Then, poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (pGMA) was grafted onto the surface via SI-ATRP, and the epoxy groups were further hydrolyzed to form an external hydrophilic layer. The properties of this ISRP-RAM for the retention of small molecules and the exclusion of proteins were evaluated using solid-phase extraction (SPE). The removal efficiencies of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and lysozyme were 94.9% and 93.5%, respectively. The recoveries of five drugs, puerarin, p-hydroxybenzaldehyde, loratadine, nifedipine and diazepam, were 93.2-116%. Furthermore, the ISRP-RAM was employed for the SPE of five phthalate esters (PAEs) from bovine milk prior to high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis. The results indicate that the prepared ISRP-RAM is qualified for practical bioanalysis.

A 25-year-old male presented with a ballistic fracture of the right glenoid resulting in > 30% loss of the posterior glenoid articular surface and acute posterior glenohumeral instability that was treated with open reduction internal fixation with iliac crest autograft transfer. There is limited consensus on the operative management of ballistic intra-articular fractures due to the heterogeneity of these injuries. Acute posterior glenohumeral instability secondary to a ballistic fracture is a rare injury pattern.

Wet chemical sensors autonomously sample and analyze water using chemical assays. Their internal fluidics are not susceptible to biofouling (the undesirable accumulation of microorganisms, algae, and animals in natural waters) due to the harsh chemical environment and dark conditions; however, the sample intake and filter are potentially susceptible. This paper describes the use of copper intake filters, incorporated to prevent fouling, on two different wet chemical nitrate sensors that each use different variants of the Griess assay (in particular, different nitrate reduction steps) to quantify nitrate concentrations.

A focused laser beam from an ultrafast optical oscillator propagates in the LiNbO layer and emits a Cherenkov cone of terahertz radiation to the Si semicone. The radiation is totally internally reflected by the semicone's convex surface and escapes the semicone through its base as a collimated beam.
