The genome of a virus associated with cherry twisted leaf disease (CTLaV, isolate ZH) was sequenced and consists of 8431 nucleotides, excluding a poly(A) tail at the 3' end. Genome analysis shows that CTLaV-ZH represents a new and distinct species and has a genome organization similar to those of unassigned viruses in the family Betaflexiviridae. The CTLaV-ZH genome has five open reading frames (ORFs), with putative ORFs within ORF2 and ORF5, identified as ORF2a and ORF5a, respectively. The AUG start codons of ORF2a and ORF5a are in contexts suitable for efficient translation, with appropriate stop codons in frame.

Winter barley (Hordeum vulgare) production areas in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River are severely threatened by barley yellow mosaic disease, which is caused by Barley yellow mosaic virus and Barley mild mosaic virus. Improving barley disease resistance in breeding programs requires knowledge of genetic loci in germplasm resources. In this study, bulked segregant analysis (BSA) identified a novel major quantitative trait loci (QTL) QRym.

Host-switching and recombination drive the diversification of worldwide.

However, the composition and function of protist-associated microbiomes remains largely elusive. Here, we employ cultivation-independent single-cell isolation and genome-resolved metagenomics to provide detailed insights into underexplored microbiomes and viromes of over 100 currently uncultivable ciliates and amoebae isolated from diverse environments.

To induce antibodies against conserved receptor-binding domain (RBD) regions for protection against SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern and zoonotic sarbecoviruses, we developed mosaic-8b RBD-nanoparticles presenting eight sarbecovirus RBDs arranged randomly on a 60-mer nanoparticle. Mosaic-8b immunizations protected animals from challenges from viruses whose RBDs were matched or mismatched to those on nanoparticles.

Genomic investments in antivirus defense can be coarsely classified into two categories, immune systems that abrogate virus reproduction resulting in clearance, and altruistic programmed cell death (PCD) systems. Prokaryotic defense systems are enormously diverse, as revealed by an avalanche of recent discoveries, but the basic ecological determinants of defense strategy remain poorly understood.
