Rat peritoneal mast cells isolated by gradient centrifugation in Percoll were placed between two membrane filters in a Sartorius filter apparatus and superfused with isotonic balanced salt solutions or with deionized isotonic sucrose. Histamine was released according to ion exchange kinetics. Our explanation of the observed phenomena is as follows. The superfusion induces a flow of cytoplasmic K+ ions across the histamine-containing granules, resulting in an ion exchange K+ in equilibrium Hi+ ions at the histamine binding sites. The concomitant equimolar outflow of histamine and potassium is considered to be due to a functional interplay between two histamine pools, a release and a donor pool. As the result of the K+ in equilibrium Hi+ ion exchange at the histamine binding sites of the release pool, these sites become transiently occupied by K+ ions only to be immediately reoccupied by Hi+ ions from the donor pool. The observed equimolar outflows are consistent with a 1/1 molar ratio in the exchange between histamine and potassium ions. The essential role of cytoplasmic potassium in the histamine release mechanism is a new and important observation with possible implications not only as to histamine release in general (including so-called 'spontaneous' histamine release) but also as to the release of biogenic amines and other positively charged substances stored in granules in ionic linkage to the matrix.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a class of persistent organic compounds widely detected in the environments. Due to their chemical stability, physical adsorption has emerged as one of the most promising techniques for remediating PFAS-containing wastewater, while some newly synthesized functional absorbents in powder form suffer from separation issues. Inspired by mussel biology, we have successfully synthesized a porous spongy absorbent termed aminated polyurethane (PU-PDA-PANI) with over 99.

Calcination-Induced Tight Nano-Heterointerface for Highly Effective Eradication of Rib Fracture-Related Infection by Near-Infrared Irradiation.

Rib fracture-related infection is a challenging complication of thoracic trauma due to the difficulty of treating it with antibiotics alone and the need for a second operation to remove the infected fixator and sterilize the surrounding infected tissue. In this study, inspired by the photocatalytic performance of and ion release from silver-based materials, including AgPO and AgS, a hybrid AgPO-AgS heterojunction was prepared based on anion exchange and a one-step calcination process to design a nonantibiotic coating aimed at preventing and treating rib fracture-related infection with short-term 808 nm near-infrared irradiation. Calcination at 250 °C enhanced the inductive effect of the phosphate radical and led to the formation of a tight nanoheterogeneous interface between AgPO and AgS, thereby promoting interfacial electron transfer and reducing the recombination of photogenerated carriers.

Removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions by activated carbon and its composite with PWO: A spectroscopic study to reveal adsorption mechanism.

Molecular scale information is needed to understand ions coordination to mineral surfaces and consequently to accelerate the design of improved adsorbents. The present work reports on the use of two-dimensional correlation Fourier Transform infra-red spectroscopy (2D-COS-FTIR) and hetero 2D-COS-FTIR- X-ray diffraction (XRD) to probe the mechanism of Cr(VI) removal from aqueous solutions by activated carbon (AC) and its composite with PWO (AC-composite). The adsorption data at an initial Cr(VI) concentration of 320 mg L (320 ppm) revealed maximum adsorption capacities of 65 mg g for AC and 73 mg g for AC-composite, corresponding to removal percentages of 83 % and 94 %, respectively.

Herein, electrochemical sensing of paracetamol in polluted water was achieved using facile-synthesized tungsten oxide nanoparticles. Ion exchange resin has been used as a sustainable preparation route, while the prepared nanoparticles have been characterized by XRD and SEM analyses. Orthorhombic WO·HO nano-plates have been synthesized a facile preparation method, where the crystal size has been calculated as 25-33 nm, and these results were used to create a 3D model of the prepared WO·HO nano-plates.
