Descending necrotizing mediastinitis is a life-threatening bacterial infection that typically spreads from an odontogenic, pharyngeal or neck infection. Despite the vagueness of symptoms, diagnosis must be made quickly. Owing to the high mortality rate, aggressive surgical treatment is indicated.
