Prediction of near-term risk of developing breast cancer using computerized features from bilateral mammograms.

Asymmetry of bilateral mammographic tissue density and patterns is a potentially strong indicator of having or developing breast abnormalities or early cancers. The purpose of this study is to design and test the global asymmetry features from bilateral mammograms to predict the near-term risk of women developing detectable high risk breast lesions or cancer in the next sequential screening mammography examination. The image dataset includes mammograms acquired from 90 women who underwent routine screening examinations, all interpreted as negative and not recalled by the radiologists during the original screening procedures. A computerized breast cancer risk analysis scheme using four image processing modules, including image preprocessing, suspicious region segmentation, image feature extraction, and classification was designed to detect and compute image feature asymmetry between the left and right breasts imaged on the mammograms. The highest computed area under curve (AUC) is 0.754±0.024 when applying the new computerized aided diagnosis (CAD) scheme to our testing dataset. The positive predictive value and the negative predictive value were 0.58 and 0.80, respectively.

The global burden of dengue disease is escalating under the influence of climate change, with India contributing a third of the total. The non-linearity and regional heterogeneity inherent in the climate-dengue relationship and the lack of consistent data makes it difficult to make useful predictions for effective disease prevention. The current study investigates these non-linear climate-dengue links in Pune, a dengue hotspot region in India with a monsoonal climate and presents a model framework for predicting both the near-term and future dengue mortalities.

Methods: The following interventions were identified: antibiotics for preterm premature rupture of membrane, antenatal corticosteroids for fetal lung maturation, partograph use during labor and delivery, induction of labor at or post term, skilled birth care and safe childbirth checklist during labor and delivery. Background: Severe neonatal inflammatory conditions in very preterm infants (VPT: <32 weeks gestational age, GA) are linked to adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. Differences in white matter (WM) microstructure of the corpus callosum (CC) have been observed at age 6 in VPT children with a history of severe neonatal inflammation. The goal of this study was to determine whether these CC differences can be detected at term-equivalent age using diffusion MRI (dMRI), and whether neonatal inflammation is associated with altered WM in additional tracts implicated in the encephalopathy of prematurity.
