This study presented a method to upgrade existing aeration tanks to remove total nitrogen (TN). Bioplates carrying entrapped biomass were installed in an aeration basin to create anoxic/anaerobic zones where denitrification can proceed. In a reactor that coupled bioplates containing entrapped biomass (equivalent to as high as 7,500 mg/L of biomass) and an activated sludge suspension (at mixed liquor suspended solids of 1,300-2,400 mg/L), nitrification efficiency exceeded 95% for an influent wastewater containing 21-54 mg/L of NH3-N. In all cases amended with alkalinity and with or without added methanol as an electron source, TN removal was between 60 and 70%. The results demonstrated anoxic/oxic or anaerobic/anoxic/oxic processes could be incorporated in a conventional aeration basin, requiring no substantial modifications of the vessel and operation, and thus providing improved treatment in terms of nitrogen removal in the conventional suspended-growth process.

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) comprise energy-intensive processes, serving as primary contributors to overall WWTP costs. This research study proposes a novel approach that integrates support vector regression (SVR) with the firefly algorithm (FFA) for the prediction of energy consumption in a WWTP in Chlef City, Algeria. The database comprises a comprehensive set of 1,653 samples, capturing diverse information categories.

This article presents the authors' perspectives on modelling best practices for nature-based solutions (NBS). The authors led a workshop on NBS modelling as part of the 8th IWA Water Resource Recovery Modelling Seminar (WRRmod2022+) in January 2023, where the discussion centred around the design, use cases, and potential applications of NBS models. Four real-world case studies, encompassing an aerated lagoon, a biofilm-enhanced aerated lagoon, a stormwater basin, and a constructed wetland were reviewed to demonstrate practical applications and challenges in modelling NBS systems.

The inefficient nitrogen removal in constructed wetlands (CWs) can be attributed to insufficient carbon sources for low carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio wastewater. In this study, sugarcane bagasse fermentation liquid (SBFL) was used as a supplemental carbon source in intermittently aerated CWs to enhance nitrogen removal. The impact of different regulated influent C/N ratios on nitrogen removal and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions was investigated.

Background: Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are crucial in the scope of European Commission circular economy implementation. However, bioaerosol production may be a hazard for occupational and public health. A scoping review regarding microbial contamination exposure assessment in WWTPs was performed.

Teasing out the Effects of Natural Stressors at Chemically Contaminated Sites.

Environmental Remediation & Restoration, The Dow Chemical Company, Traverse City, Michigan, USA.

Aquatic ecosystems are often impacted by a multitude of stressors, many of which are introduced by a combination of anthropogenic activities such as agricultural development, urbanization, damming, and industrial discharge. Determining the primary stressors responsible for ecological impairments at a site can be complex and challenging; however, it is crucial for making informed management decisions. Improper diagnosis of an impaired system can lead to misguided attempts at remediation, which can be both time consuming and costly.
