Conserved class of queen pheromones stops social insect workers from reproducing.

Science

January 2014

Laboratory of Socioecology and Social Evolution, Zoological Institute, University of Leuven, Naamsestraat 59-Box 2466, 3000 Leuven, Belgium.

A major evolutionary transition to eusociality with reproductive division of labor between queens and workers has arisen independently at least 10 times in the ants, bees, and wasps. Pheromones produced by queens are thought to play a key role in regulating this complex social system, but their evolutionary history remains unknown. Here, we identify the first sterility-inducing queen pheromones in a wasp, bumblebee, and desert ant and synthesize existing data on compounds that characterize female fecundity in 64 species of social insects.

Plant-herbivore-carnivore interactions in cotton, Gossypium hirsutum: linking belowground and aboveground.

J Chem Ecol

October 2008

Crop Protection and Management Research Unit, USDA-ARS, Tifton, GA 31793, USA.

Most studies on plant-herbivore interactions focus on either root or shoot herbivory in isolation, but above- and belowground herbivores may interact on a shared host plant. Cotton (Gossypium spp.) produces gossypol and a variety of other gossypol-like terpenoids that exhibit toxicity to a wide range of herbivores and pathogens.

Given the elevated risk of cardiovascular events and the higher prevalence of silent coronary artery disease (CAD) in diabetic versus non-diabetic patients, screening asymptomatic diabetic patients for CAD is an appealing concept. However, many factors argue against implementing a broad-based screening program at the present time. Foremost is the lack of any published data demonstrating that a prospectively applied screening program improves outcome in asymptomatic diabetic patients.

Unlabelled: The purpose of this study was to assess myocardial metabolic activity in the area of reverse redistribution and determine the prognostic value of reverse redistribution and PET imaging. Reverse redistribution is thought to be a manifestation of reperfusion therapy and associated with a favorable clinical outcome. Preliminary observations from the Thrombolysis and Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) trial suggest that reverse redistribution is associated with higher incidence of future cardiac events.
