The levels of DNA and RNA in gastric mucosa were assayed in 50 patients suffering various morphological variants of chronic gastritis and 73 cases of stomach cancer. Nearly identical rise in nucleic acid concentrations was identified in both atrophic gastritis and stomach cancer as compared to atrophy-free gastritis and normal condition. A link between atrophic gastritis and gastric cancer was suggested.
