AI Article Synopsis

  • Infectious laryngotracheitis, caused by gallid herpes virus 1, is a serious disease in chickens with high mortality rates that pose significant economic risks to the poultry industry.
  • A study using 15-day-old specific pathogen-free White Leghorn chickens analyzed the effects of vaccination on gene expression, revealing downregulation of myosin and collagen-related genes, which may impact respiratory function.
  • The research highlighted the upregulation of various immune-related genes post-vaccination, linking the vaccine's effectiveness to activation of major histocompatibility complex pathways that influence immune responses.

Article Abstract

Infectious laryngotracheitis is an acute, contagious, upper respiratory disease of chickens caused by gallid herpes virus 1. Due to mortality rates that can reach up to 70% depending on the virulence of the virus, the disease is of great economic importance to the poultry industry. In this study, 15-d-old specific pathogen-free White Leghorn chickens were used to perform transcriptome analysis of chicken trachea immunized with infectious laryngotracheitis virus vaccine. Myosin and several collagen-related genes were downregulated in the immunized group, suggesting that normal function and structure may be compromised. In addition, we identified some cytokine receptors and several immune genes, such as Granzyme A (GZMA), CD4 molecule (CD4), CD8a molecule (CD8A), and CD8b molecule (CD8B), that were upregulated upon vaccination. The gene ontology analysis shows that genes included in the biological process cluster were related to antigen processing and presentation, positive regulation of immune system processes, T cell selection, and positive regulation of T cell activation. In conclusion, chicken embryo origin vaccine activation of the major histocompatibility complex 1 and 2 pathways provides insight for evaluation and design of infectious laryngotracheitis vaccines.

Duck Tembusu virus (DTMUV), duck hepatitis virus (DHV), Muscovy duck reovirus (MDRV), and Muscovy duck parvovirus (MDPV) represent four emergent infectious diseases impacting waterfowl, which can be challenging to differentiate due to overlapping clinical signs. In response to this, we have developed a one-step multiplex real-time fluorescence quantitative reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR) assay, capable of simultaneously detecting DTMUV, DHV, MDRV, and MDPV. This method exhibits high specificity, avoiding cross-reactivity with other viruses such as Fowl adenoviruses (FADV), infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV), infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), infectious laryngotracheitis virus (ILTV), Haemophilus paragallinarum (Hpg), duck circovirus (DUCV), goose astrovirus (GoAstV), and mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG).

The aim of this study was to investigate the molecular characteristics and pathogenicity of recently isolated ILTV strains from China, thereby augmenting our understanding of its prevalence. The complete genome sequences of seven ILTV strains obtained from China between 2015 and 2019 were determined by high-throughput sequencing. Phylogenetic analysis showed that six isolates (SD2015, GD2017, SYB2018, HB201812, HB201806, and TJ2019) were classified together with CEO vaccine strains, while only one isolates LN2018 belonged to the wild-type cluster.

Despite the significant growth in Sonali chicken production across Bangladesh, inadequate disease surveillance and control measures along with indiscriminate antimicrobial use remain major challenges to the sector. In this study, we evaluated the disease burden and antimicrobial prescription patterns of Sonali chickens in Bangladesh using a web-based data recording system from 2020 to 2021 and analyzed 1690 cases. The diagnoses recorded in the system were presumptive, as they were based on clinico-epidemiological history, clinical signs, and gross necropsy findings noted by registered veterinarians.

Respiratory viral infections have a considerable detrimental impact on animal health as well as significant financial consequences in the poultry industry. The primary aim of this study is to investigate the major pathogens involved in respiratory diseases of poultry, the co-infection rate, and their epidemiological distribution in commercial chicken farms in Bangladesh. From June 2022 to December 2023, 300 pooled samples (swabs from live birds, and respiratory tissues from dead birds) were collected from the selected poultry farms where respiratory outbreaks were noticed.

Infectious laryngotracheitis (ILT) is a highly contagious disease, usually controlled by vaccination with live attenuated vaccines. However, the latent infection and adverse reactions caused by the live attenuated vaccines against infectious laryngotracheitis virus (ILTV) have limited its use in poultry. Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) is considered a potential vector for vaccine development, but the issue of poor stability in recombinant IBV expressing foreign genes has not yet been resolved.
