The synthesis and characterization of the first catalytic manganese N-heterocyclic carbene complexes are reported: MnBr(N-methyl-N'-2-pyridylbenzimidazol-2-ylidine)(CO)3 and MnBr(N-methyl-N'-2-pyridylimidazol-2-ylidine)(CO)3. Both new species mediate the reduction of CO2 to CO following two-electron reduction of the Mn(I) center, as observed with preparative scale electrolysis and verified with (13)CO2. The two-electron reduction of these species occurs at a single potential, rather than in two sequential steps separated by hundreds of millivolts, as is the case for previously reported MnBr(2,2'-bipyridine)(CO)3. Catalytic current enhancement is observed at voltages similar to MnBr(2,2'-bipyridine)(CO)3.

Carbon nanomaterials show outstanding promise as electrocatalysts for hydrogen peroxide (HO) synthesis via the two-electron oxygen reduction reaction. However, carbon-based electrocatalysts that are capable of generating HO at industrial-level current densities (>300 mA cm) with high selectivity and long-term stability remain to be discovered. Herein, few-layer boron nanosheets are in-situ introduced into a porous carbon matrix, creating a metal-free electrocatalyst (B-C) with HO production rates of industrial relevance in neutral or alkaline media.

Polymer gels, renowned for unparalleled chemical stability and self-sustaining properties, have garnered significant attention in electrocatalysis. Notably, organic polymer gels that exhibit temperature sensitivity and incorporate suitable polar nonvolatile liquids, enhance electronic conductivity, and impart distinct morphological features, but remain largely unexplored as electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). To address this issue, an innovative strategy is proposed for synergistic modulation of the rigidity of mainchain molecular skeleton and length of alkyl sidechains, enabling the development of organogel polymers with a sol-gel temperature-sensitive phase transition that promises high selectivity and enhanced activity in electrocatalytic processes.

Cyclohexanone oxime, a critical precursor for nylon-6 production, is traditionally synthesized via the hydroxylamine method under industrial harsh conditions. Here is present a one-step electrochemical integrated approach for the efficient production of cyclohexanone oxime under ambient conditions. This approach employed the coupling of in situ electro-synthesized HO over a cobalt (Co)-based electrocatalyst with the titanium silicate-1 (TS-1) heterogeneous catalyst to achieve the cyclohexanone ammoximation process.

Lanthanide redox reactivity remains limited to one-electron transfer reactions due to their inability to access a broad range of oxidation states. Here, we show that multielectron reductive chemistry is achieved for ytterbium by using the tripodal tris(siloxide)arene redox-active ligand, which can store two electrons in the arene anchor. Reduction of the Yb(III) complex of the tris(siloxide)arene tripodal ligand affords the Yb(II) analogue by metal-centered reduction.
